That is the >type of address that everyone gets at my university. > I work at a university, and as you see by my e-mail address, it is NOT my name, nor does it list my name anywhere in it. I requested that it be "non-published", which means the University won't give it out or put it on their directory lists, etc. As for setting your name to show or not, it's part of the Eudora system, that you can leave that "real name" space blank. I had to make up a name that wasn't close to my real name because of getting harassing e-mail from an Ex. Francesca Sutton (but then, I sign my name at the bottom and the jig is up. . . )
I have asked Rootsweb to create a FIELDS mailing list and they have complied. It is already up and running and is starting to be used by subscribers. If anyone would like to join just use the normal method. For mail mode you can send the subscribe command to: FIELDS-L-request@rootsweb.com For digest mode send the subscribe command to: FIELDS-D-request@rootsweb.com The list is for researching the name FIELD or FIELDS or any variations. Anyone who wishes to join is welcome to now. Randall Fields _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Has anyone had experience receivig military records from the Bureau of Naval Personal in Washington D C? Last August 1997, I wrote to the Bureau of Naval Personal requesting my brother's records as he was in the Viet Nam War. Hearing nothing, I wrote another lettin March 1998, and I am still waiting to hear from them. Is there an e-mail address that I might be able to send them a message? I know that the LDS Church has been microfilming in Russia. One of the archives they filmed at turned out to have not just Russian records which were expected, but records from all over Eastern Europe. (A bit sticky-fingered were the Communists, you understand.) They microfilmed everything there, since they had permission to microfilm the archives. I also read recently that all records of genealogical value for the Ukraine had been microfilmed. This doesn't mean they are currently available because it takes awhile to get them catalogued because of the volume of records involved. If the Family History Library Catalog does NOT have the references you need, ask the FHC volunteer for a REFERENCE QUESTIONAIRE. (Unfortunately, a lot of volunteers in some FHC's aren't aware of what they are, or what they are supposed to be used for, so you have to ask for it.) You can fill out the questionaire, explain what you're looking for, ask if has been microfilmed, and if so, when it will be available. After all, if it isn't on the FHC catalog, it does not necessarily mean it isn't in Salt Lake, waiting it's turn to be catalogued, or possibly already on the shelves for use. At the arrival rate of somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 reels of microfilm per week and another huge # of books arriving, there is no way that any local catalog system is going to be current for all of the holdings. Mail the questionaire to the address given and someone will get back with you. Although there is a professional staff at the FHC in Salt Lake, many of the people working there are also volunteers, and it may take awhile to get back with you, especially if you are requesting information about something a bit off the beaten track--which Russian records would be. I know that a friend requested information about some Russian Jewish records via RQ, and they were told the records requested will be ready for ordering some time this fall...that they had been microfilmed. The Reference Questionaire won't get your personal ancestral research done for you, but can get questions answered about availability of source material, translation of a bit of material (I don't know how much they'd be willing to do for you--you'd have to ask), or copies of a few pages of a book or microfilm (you have to give them the reference you want copied--they won't look it up) for cost. Karen
It is my understanding that vital records are kept at the General Register Office (St Catherine's House). I do not know the address - but you may want to look it up when you get there. I do not know about Russian records - but if you ask at your local FHL when you go in - they should be more than happy to assist you in any way they can. Try looking in the Family History Library Catalog - available both on the computer (easiest to use) and on fiche under Russia. This should give you a list of what records the library has available. These records may be books in SLC or may be film/fiche you have to order. But it may also list items available in the library you are in. As for the census records. The FHL you visit should have alot of those films. Ask the librarians to assist you in using the soundex index to try to locate your family. The librarians do not really have time to answer questions over the phone as there are usually many people in the library who need assistance. But they should be willing to assist you when you come in. In our library (Sacramento, CA) you can call and make an appointment to have one of the librarians give you a tour and assist you in whatever way needed. You might try this. Now on to your last question. I do not know about GENCOM. But GEDCOM is a program used to transfer genealogical information from one system to another. For instance, if you go to the library and find information on their computer Ancestrial File or IGI, you can either print the information out and then transcribe it, or you can save it to a disk and use your genealogical computer program at your home to review it and add it as necessary to your own files. If this is your preference (as it is usually mine) you may want to take a floppy with you as I find the library (they can sell you one) is usually out of them. Good luck. Is anyone on the list descended from the same family as President James Buchanan? There has been much discussion in my wife's family that they are descended from possibly his father or grandfather. Please respond to me off list please. Jerry Lorow

I am looking for a "directory" to websites that have Cemetery Registers on them. Does anyone know of such a directory? This is not a listing of Cemeteries. It is a Directory of URLs on which a Cemetery Register has been made and posted as an aid to genealogist looking for the names of their ancestors on the gravestones. If there IS such a website, I am working on a Register for a Houston County, Texas Cemetery and would like to link to it when I get it finished. If there is NOT such a place....... well,,,, I guess I will just have to MAKE one, huh! <smile> THANKS! tex From #GenealogyForum IRC Channel on Afternet: WE HAVE A NEW HOME ON THE WEB! <http://www.rare.on.ca/users/genealogyforum/index.htm>http://www.rare.on.ca/ users/genealogyforum/index.htm Contains Surnames of Visitors and Simple instructions for joining us. ***** New INBOUND Email is gen-4m@rare.on.ca (It eats Spam for Lunch!) <smile> ==== GenSwap Mailing List ==== To contact the GenSwap list owner, use converse@alltel.net

Marcia Collins wrote regarding a search engine that would identify the owner of a phone number she has. I use AnyWho:Reverse Telephone Number Search - just insert the area code & number and you will pull up the name provided it's not a non-published number. Hope this helps. JPearce601@aol.com
Found this little snippet in a magazine this evening and thought it might be useful information, especially for those of us who have children using the Internet: PROTECTING YOURSELF ON-LINE Don't reveal personal information, such as your home or work phone number or address, to anyone you meet on-line. Dont divulge where you work. Withhold your last name, especially if it's uncommon. "Remember, most stalkers get their information from you," says CyberAngels' Colin Gabriel Hatcher. Pick a gnder-neutral e-mail address and user name (the nickname you use in a newsgroup or chat room). Most predators are prowling for women, so feminine usernames are more likely to be targeted. Send yourself an e-mail and see what it says about you. All e-mail comes with a "header" or return address and "signature". Make sure your e-mail address doesn't include or closely resemble your real name or give away any other personal information. If it does, contact your system administrator and change it. Find out what information is available you on-line. Try your e-mail address at one of the finger servers on the Internet. "Your finger travels with you when you surf the Internet and when you send e-mails," explins Carol A. Lane, author of Naked In Cyberspace How To Find Personal Information Online (Information Today, Inc.). Your finger, also called a plan file, can contain all the information that you used when you signed up with your ISP, including your name, address, phone number and employer. If you don't like what comes up, contact your ISP to change your entry. A list of finger servers can be found at <http://www.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/World_Wide_Wed/Gatewa ys/F>http://www.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/World_Wide_Wed/Gat eways/F inger_Gateways/. Consider using anonymous remailers. This way you can post messages to newsgroups and still conceal your identity. (Find out more about anonymous remailers at <http://www.well.com/user/abacard/remail.html>http://www.well.com/user/abaca rd/remail.html.) This came out of Galmour magazine and obviously, this doesn't apply to most of us, but I know someone who met a man online and was stalked and it was a horrible experience for her. I've also seen and heard the stories of children being preyed upon. So hopefully it will help someone out there. BKay

In answer to the question. What can I find out with a SS#? If you write to: Social Security Adm. Office of Central Records Operation 300 N. Greene Street Baltimore, MD 21201 Ask for a Third Party Request for Photocopy - When you get the form send it with the fee (I think its $2.00) You will get a copy of your ancestors application for a SS# - It has a lot of info, like parents name, birth date and death date and place of birth and death of applicant.
