    1. FIND TIMKEN TOMBSTONE
    2. Lois L. Coffelt
    3. My appologies folks the first time around I gave the wrong Timken. It should have been William Cord Timken born Oct. 23, 1885 either in KS or OK. His first wife's name was Myrtle Williams, they had two daughters Mildred who married Loren Dashiell and they had first a son then 3 daughters. Second daughter was Lethama or Letha Mae [not sure which] she married Maurice Morris and they had two daughters. After his first wife died he married a lady named Lydia. They were in Spokane WA in the early 1960's. That's the only information I have on them. Lois L. Coffelt Nee Feldman Researching Timken's & Feldmans, later will research Gerken's & Holtzen's, Green, & Miller.

    3. Hi Jean: I know we will agree to disagree on this. However, I am not going to take sides on this one<g> With the advent of the American Public screaming that government is too big and costly something has to give. Unfortunately, sometimes that means closing a place down that means a lot to the people in the area like a military base, records center, closing VA hospitals in rural areas, etc. We scream and complain about higher taxes but I really don't know what the solution is. The keyword in the government today is work smarter not harder and do it with less to save the taxpayers money. Somewhere there has to be a compromise I suspect. 3. I am not sure about the medals, however, you could try the National Personnel Records Center, 9700 Page Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63132. It seems to me there is a charge if the request is from someone other than the person who is entitled to it, plus I think you also need to be able to prove they are entitled to it. However, from the sound of your e-mail it appears you may already know which medals your relative is entitled to. If this is the case, those medals then could be purchased at a military collectibles type store or a surplus store that sells military type items. Sometimes even antique malls have them. Sadly I saw a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for sale in booth at a antique mall. I make shadow boxes of red oak and my medals are to be passed down to my youngest daughter who is in the Army now. 2. When the medals are listed on the DD-214, I have known individuals who sent a COPY of their DD-214 with their request to St. Louis and received them. They can also be purchased at a Military Clothing Sales Store or Base BX/PX if one is near your location. In later years, I believe they issued "orders" for the presentation of medals. Hope this helps a wee bit. George, you might want to comment on the "orders" - do you know when they began that practice and was it only in the Army or service-wide? Edna

    1. Re: townships
    2. Look for the records of a county in the courthouse that had jurisdiction at the time of the event (the parent county). Because many records were recorded into books, there wouldn't be a way of taking records from just one area of the county over to the new county. There can be some exceptions for finding things in the parent county. Marriage records may have occurred over the county line if one county seat was closer than the parent county seat. So look not in the new or in the parent county, but in the surrounding original counties if you've got someone whose marriage you can't find. (This may even occur in a different state, if you're looking at a county that is a border county.) Karen

    3. Hi Chris and All Tippers! I use my handy rand-McNally Road Atlas to locate current counties. Be careful, however. There have been many county boundary changes over these last several hundred years. I use the Rand-McNally for current locations but then refer to Thorndale & Dollahide's great book with maps for every Federal census year for every state. It shows both current and "then" county boundaries. It is an invaluable help when researching older records. Save yourself the wasted time and frustration of researching in or writing to the WRONG courthouse. Check the maps. :-) Happy hunting! George G.
