    1. Scary article about ads on Lists
    2. I found this very scary article in "Lingua Franca" magazine, an academic type publication (July/Aug 1998 issue) - I won't type all of it, so I won't violate their copyright: Coming soon to a discussion list near you: advertising by e-mail. At least if the Sift people have their way. One of dozens of Stanford University spin-offs, the Silicon Valley firm is trying to make e-mail advertising legitimate. Sift matches advertisers like Wired magazine and Dell computers with the most desirable online discussion lists - the digital answer to direct mail. After attracting an advertiser to a list, Sift president Jeff Wilkins asks the list's moderator for permission to effectively rent the names of subscribers for a onetime fee - usually $50 for every one thousand subscribers. Then, he delivers the text-only ads to the e-mail boxes of each subscriber, often with an explanation from the list moderator. So far, more than one thousand lists have signed up with Sift for ads. <snip> [mostly computer type lists]. . Wilkins says that other kinds of discussion lists are starting to follow suit. Will subscribers to Chaucer-L be hearing about discount fares to Canterbury any time soon? <snip> . .it may be only a matter of time before e-mail advertising becomes a regular source of university revenue. After all, in the increasingly entrepreneurial world of academe, the ad money that Sift offers can go to a department, a lab - even into the list owner's pocket. "Academic institutions have historically been shielded from the economic realities of the world," says Wilkins. "That may be ending. . ." I sure hope nobody in the genealogical list world starts selling our names - I have worked very hard to take my name OFF mailing lists, and send stickers on everything I order saying "don't sell or rent my name and address". . . They never let up, do they? Francesca

    3. Another excellent site for a Spanish/English dictionary that I received: http://www.pathfinder.com/@@LVBKqwUAWyqPE8S4/travel/language/index.html Foreign Languages for Travellers It works from English into many languages (including Spanish), or vice versa, and for those with a sound card, the audio component of this site will allow you to hear the phrases in various languages, as well as read them. Another keeper! Thanx Mary Anne!!

    2. In a message dated 6/29/98 8:31:04 AM Central Daylight Time, WWWest@eufaula.lib.ok.us writes: << GenTips-L@rootsweb.com >> In order to access the materials at the main Family History Library in Salt Lake City you must either go to your nearest LDS Family History Center (probably most large US cities have one now) or to Salt Lake. The Salt Lake library is probably the largest of its kind in the world, although, unfortunately--not comprehensive yet. The resources available there are not to be missed! (Some public libraries have the Family Search CD's in their genealogy department so that you can use Ancestral File, the IGI, SS death index, military death index [Korea & Vietnam only], and library card catalog at the public library. The references listed on the catalog have to be used at a Family History Center however.) Most microfilms can be rented for a small fee (which essentially covers postage costs) of abt $3.25--it will vary a little bit depending on where you are--and be available at the local FHC for you for about 4-6 weeks (again it varies depending on where you are). They are renewable. These microfilms are of genealogically important documents from all over the world (for instance, they believe all genealogically important documents for the Ukraine have been microfilmed and will be available over the next few months as they get them cataloged.) Books do not circulate, but some are available on microfilm or microfiche. (If there is a book you need that is not filmed, especially if indexed, a reference questionaire can be sent & they can xerox the pages for you for price of the xeroxing.) If you don't find an area that you're interested in, ask the volunteer at the FHC for a reference questionaire. Since they get in about 1,000 films per week, no local facility is going to have a current listing. However, the Reference questionaire will get you the call numbers if they have the record & it has been cataloged. If they have it, but it has not been cataloged yet, they can also tell you that, and an approximate time to recheck. They may also be able to indicate whether or not filming is in process in the area you are interested in. (For example, I understand they have microfilm teams in Nebraska doing county marriage records right now, among other places.) Whether a film is available for circulation depends on the contract worked out when the record was microfilmed. Some jurisdictions allowed the filming, but refused permission to allow them to circulate the record. Good luck, & have fun. I've done Canadian, Scottish, Norwegian & Swedish, as well as US through my local FHC. Karen

    1. Which is the Immigrant?
    2. When assigning "generation" numbers to your ancestors who immigrate to America, which is correct in the following situation. Aaron COOKE bapt 20 Mar 1613/14 Bridport Devon England son of Aaron and Elizabeth (CHARDE) COOKE. After her husband's death in England Elizabeth (CHARDE) COOKE married Thomas FORD and the FORD family immigrates along with Aaron (COOKE) and other family members. Should Aaron COOKE be shown as first or second generation when preparing a "ranked" family history?  I have seen this particular case covered both ways - each was done by respected genealogists. If the answer is Aaron COOKE is assigned first generation, WHY? Would it make a difference, if Elizabeth (CHARDE)(COOKE) FORD immigrated eralier than her son -  and likewise, would it make a difference if she immigrated later than her son? Thanks Bob

    1. Ocala Newspapers
    2. Someone named Arlene was looking for a newspaper in Ocala, FL to try and find her grandfather's obit. There is one called "The Star Banner", also if she goes to <http://altavista.digital.com/>http://altavista.digital.com/ and types in newspapers in FL. there is a listing of all newspapers for the state. Also someone requested a look-up on WFT volume 2 - I have the family finder index, SS death index, vol. 1-6 and will be receiving vol. 8-12 early this week and ordering vol. 6-7 next week (have to spread it out - puts a little strain on the pocket book) I'll be happy to do look ups for anyone. Just e- mail me. RLugowski@aol.com I enjoy all the information I read on e-mail from your site. Ruth in Mooresville, NC  e-mail - RLugowski@aol.com

    1. Re: Back on Line with good news!
    2. Sonya The best of luck and good wishes whichever job you choose!  I really appreciate being included in your "cousin" e-mail. Back in May I became part of a group of "cousins" researching our common DeHart lineage.  We started in basically the same manner - what I called the "Cousin Chain Letter".  Within 2-3 weeks, we graduated and now have our own DeHart List (similar to Roots Surname Lists, but we run it ourselves). One of the "cousins" donates her time to input some of the following information on her homepages: Researchers lines - "Cousins" have their direct Dehart Lineage posted Cemetaries with DeHart names DeHart marriages DeHart History DeHart Obits DeHart Loose Ends DeHart Cherokee Connections Links to other DeHart researchers homepages and more We communicate almost on a daily basis (you're probably familiar with Digests) either in sub-single or digest (once a day all posts) through our server, <http://www.onelist.com/>www.onelist.com.  We now have over 60 subscribers (started with nine April 24) and we have exchanged a ton of information and help. If you would like to take a look, go to: <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/5612/dehart.html>http://www.geoc ities.com/Heartland/Valley/5612/dehart.html Scroll down Amber's Dehart outline report and you'll find the other pages.  It would be great to have something like that for the Caudle/Caudill lines. Would be glad to help if you believe there would be enough interest.  Several of us on the Dehart List have Caudill/Caudle connections. Anyway, hope your move goes smoothly and the job turns out to be terrific. Gloria raglady@aol.com
