    3. As of 1978 the little (c) symbol is no longer necessary. The words "All Rights Reserved" are no longer necessary. You simply state Copyright 1998 John Q. 2. While you wer at it why did you give her the counties if you use it all the time.. Earl To the individual who wrote requesting the names of counties in Iowa, I was by no means "criticizing" you when I suggested you purchase an atlas.  I have one and use it all the time.  Perhaps I should have also added that bit of information.  If you did indeed feel I was criticizing, I apologize. However, I do sincerely suggest anyone doing their genealogy to purchase an atlas that indicates counties.  It has been one of my greatest assets and definitely a time saver.  Connie

    1. Re: Listing the Living
    2. My policy on listing the living is as follows: If they are listed in the phone directory then I can list them in my genealogy files. If they are listed in the state registery then I can list them in my genealogy files. In all other cases I get permission from the individual. Any living person who thinks their lives are private anymore are dead wrong. I have a son who is attending college majoring in computer science and telecommunications and he has shown me on several occasions how to extract information on most any living individual with just a name. Neither of us abuse the rights of individuals and have no desire to do so. rich

    1. Central Branch, Nat'l Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers
    2. Hello all, I am new at composing inquiries so if I stumble, please be kind :) I am attempting to find the location (state and county) of the Veterans Home entitleld "Central Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers". My grandfather, George W. Lane, according to his pension records, was a resident of this facility at the time of his death on 14 January 1914. He was a former member of the Music Company, 23rd Regiment, Indiana Infantry. In 1908 he was residing in Jeffersonville (Clark Co) IN. I would very much like to learn the physical location of this facility in order that I might obtain a copy of his death certificate. Material found on the web indicated that after the civil war, many State veterans homes were established. I feel certain he was not the only resident but no one - not even the Adjutant General of the State of IN - had ever heard of it and my letter to them had been forwarded to several other offices, including the American Legion, all with negative results. My last resort would be to write to National Headquarters of the Veterans' Administration but thought I would give you good folks a try first. Any and all hints, suggestions or information would be most appreciated.

To post one's own personal data is fine, but be sure to get permission of living folks before you put anything else up. I've heard that some have gotten upset enough to call their lawyer about it. 2. Lois L. Coffelt
    3. I listed my whole genealogy on the Timken Family on the internet, not knowing you were not supposed to. Wish I had asked the question you just did before doing so. How do I get it off the internet???? I also have the wrong e-mail address on it, I changed it on the home page and a friend told me it would also change the one on the Internet, but not so. When I went back to my home page recently the old e-mail address is there and not the most recent one. HELP. Oh sorry this was with FTM. Lois Lois

    2. When preparing family history data for relatives, I include those living. It seems a bit fruitless to not include them---can't talk to the dead ones. However, I DO make sure that folks KNOW this before they agree to give me their info. I also tell them it is for family use only. No adresses or such are listed. If they are requested, I check with the submitter or the individual involved before divulging the info. I have had no problems & many complements on helping to keep the familes connected. JMHO. The 1870 Census Mecklenburg Co., VA Bluestone Township is now posted at http://www.rootsweb.com/~vameckle/index.htm Thank you to those who have sent in recommendations for corrections where there were errors. There is just so much data and JoLee and I can not possibly pick up all errors especially when the census taker had bad handwriting or the copy is very bad. This dist. of the Mecklenburg Co., VA census was in good hand and easy to transcribe. There were very few ?? which JoLee and I have to resolve. Also would like to thank those who sent email thanking US for OUR work. Without JoLee's help I would not have been able to finish - would have given up long ago. 1. WHAT would you suggest?
    2. marcia collins
    3. I simply do not know the steps I should now take! I know there is a wealth of information on this list..so let me test your 'puzzle power'. Celia Sanders Lanier b. aprox 1826 as in 1850 Ouchita Co AR. census she was 21. Married to Richard BUSSELL also 21 with 2 month old daughter. 21 would seem an older age to begin a family for a woman in those times, correct? I have NEVER found them in 1870, though I know they were in TX 1874 and Pineveill Missouri 1863. I have followed them well from that point on. My hunt is for Celia! I do not know if SANDERS is Middle or maiden name. I have not found evidence for either question. I DO know that she was ALWAYS referred to by family as Celia Sanders Lanier..So much so that I feel there must be SOME significance to this. The SANDERS are much allied with the BUSSELL'S, and all seem to end in TEXAS and NEW MEXICO. It has been said Celia had a sister named Elizabeth Hicks Lanier...and Also that Celia ALWAYS wore long black braids, and was Indian Looking. Well, if she was Indian, I have NOT found her on a DAWES or similar roll, nor her children. 1880 Ellis Co TX census she was referred to as MRS.. This could be because the nieghbor gave the inf. and did not know, correct? It had been told me it could be as Indian had there own census..IS this correct, and would it explain MRS. differently? I DO know that Celia's children were STRONG Baptist..On there obits in the late 1930/s the date of 'converversion' is stated on All 6 adult children..Is this the Norm for that age, OR does is mean they were the product of a Missionary school perhaps, leading BACK to Indian? Two of the Men (children of Richard and Celia) became Baptist preachers, I know this from obits, but CANNOT find a record one of it. I simply do not have the knowledge of what records are available, or what question to now ask!! I would like some input on WHERE to now search for answers. Thank you So much Marcia Moore Collins Beware the Jaberwawk! he may be your Ancestor!

    2. In a message dated 7/3/98 9:13:48 AM Central Daylight Time, mcollins@sfths.sft434.k12.ks.us writes: << GenTips-L@rootsweb.com >> I just listened to a tape about searching for midwestern Indian ancestry saying that the Native Americans from abt 1885 on were among the best documented of all Americans in the time period. (Of course, there are exceptions in all cases, but it is still heartening to know.) There are a lot of Indian tribes, so that the Indian connection may not be Cherokee, hence not on the Dawes rolls. There are quite a few Native American Censuses, available from the National Archives--probably also obtainable from Heritage Quest (formerly AGLL) or from the Family History Center. Baptist records for birth records tend to be non-existant as they don't baptize babies or very young children, waiting until they reach an age of accountability. This may be the conversion spoken of, or it may be that they came from another faith, or a non-faith to the Baptist Church. (Only more research will identify that for sure.) I'd start checking indexes for all of the years you haven't previously found your missing links, and begin looking at each family with the same surname (& variant spellings--be creative, their spellings frequently were), and all associated surnames. It may take quite awhile to look for all of the families, but you may be able to locate them this way. To make it easier, begin with the counties you KNOW they lived in, and branch out from there. (It increases the probability of finding them.) Land records in the areas you have definitely found them in sometimes will indicate the former residence of a person when buying land in a new area (not always). Land records can usually be gotten through LDS FHC, depending on the area. Good luck finding the family. Karen
