    3. In getting a cousin's obit from the New Haven Register, I noticed there was a notice for Gordon MacRae (the actor). It was in the 28 JAN 1986 issue of the paper. If anyone is searching for this name, I'll supply the entire Obit. Arlene in FL

    3. Hi Jackie:  Been there done that so to speak.  Here is something you can do.  You can create another file from your original and give it a different name.  Then go to each person who is still living and leave the birth dates blank as with the marriage dates.  Course, these dates are really a matter of public record. As you have probably noticed with FTM CDs, they use the term "Private" for dates of those people still living. I presently have my original file and those files sent to me from "newly" discovered cousins.  I created one new file called Family and then started appending the other files into it.  Since some of these other cousins are from collateral lines, I had asked if anyone would object to my posting of the info to FTM or on the net.  A couple came back and said okay if the living were not included.  Others didn't respond.  Playing it safe I went no further. However, I do have my original file and that I will post as I do not have that many collateral lines in it or either I do not have that much information from the collateral line.  Of the bloodline cousins, I have had no problems there since myself and only one other cousin has been doing any research on the Basden name.  Amazing how large this family is and no one knew anything until I started stumbling along<g>.  I had met cousins last year I never knew before and introduced them to each other as cousins and they were not even aware of the fact they were cousins, but yet they knew each other previously. I'm sure there is a better way to do it than what I suggested, but I have the tendenancy to try and use the easiest and quickest method rather than the most technical. 3. Am I missing something? I realize a degree of privacy is important but it seems we have suddenly become paranoid on the date information for living individuals thing. Are we going to leave out information on possibly 4 or 5 generations until they pass away? If any family member REQUEST that his information not be given to other family members so be it......otherwise such information is of interest to me personally, even if I were not doing research. Jackie, I sympathize with your questioning position. Personally, I am including dates in my information unless there is a question of accurracy or possible embarrassement ( why is my birthdate only 6 months after my parents were married--type thing). 3. I did not ever feel the frustration in all the years that I have been researching my family (18years) until I decided to try the internet. I am one of two people in my family doing research--he is my fathers double cousin--and I do not expect the others to take interest. The part that I find frustrating is that I can read a posting and tell if a person needs help or actually might have information that might be of help to me. Either way, if I have info for them I let them know, sometimes I make mistakes without really reading the post. The really hard part to except is that if you post with a really strange name...ISON...then why do others ask if he had a brother, sister, mother or father when you've already stated that what you post is all you have? This makes absolutly no ryhme or reason to me. I have lots of information gathered that I share if needed, even on my wifes family. I even have copies of very old pictures and hopefully will have more soon, but it's this internet thing that bothers me. I will continue my research because a few people out there are trying to help, some I connect with and some are as frustrated as me---but on we go---not sure on posting anymore for awhile! Rusty

    3. I would think that it would be a great gift to give at reunions and other gatherings or holidays but you might want to ask the living relatives you mentioned how they would feel being listed in the book to avoid any bad feelings. Some want to maintain their privacy and will maybe let you just list their name w/o all the dates and such. I would just leave that up to them on the content of the entry. But it is a really great idea and I might just use it for one of our reunions coming up. Cathi

    1. John Emmitt WELLS
    2. Good afternoon everyone,        I am going to try this again but just a little differently this time.        I am seeking information on my Great Grandfather, John Emmitt WELLS. Death certificate gives birth as Dec 27, 1860 in Jamestown, N.Y.  He married Susan Belle LANGDON Dec 2, 1883 in Worthington, Nobles, MN. He died Feb 25 1935 in Los Angeles, CA.   I can find no information before the 1883 marriage. They moved to Los Angeles, Ca sometime between May 1886 and August of 1888. Does anyone have a John Emmitt WELLS in their family?         According to my Uncle my Greatgrandfather wouldn't talk about his life, If you tried to ask questions he would leave the room.  According to my Mother after  my Grandfather married my Grandmother the family didn't approve of the marriage, he married beneath himself, and they didn't have very much to do with my grandparents family.  I have tried in vain to get in touch with my cousins in the South Bay area but to no avail.        John and Susan had 4 children:  Don William b. Nov 13, 1884, Miriam b. May 26, 1886 both in Worthington, Nobles, MN then they moved to Los Angeles, CA and had my grandfather, Trent Hewitt b. Aug 8, 1888 and Lilly b. Aug 28, 1890.        John was in the Masons and he was a carpenter for the Los Angeles School System at Manuel Arts High School.        If anyone has any information at all please forward it to me personally at dolfin711@aol.com.   I will gladly share everything I have. TIA   Carol Thun

    1. Listing the Living
    2. Hi: Is there anyone who can tell me what is the proper way to address this situation? I have collected thousands of names in doing my 10 family surnames.  Have collected this info via phone, mail and personal interviews, collected all sorts of stories, articles, photos,  pictures of headstones, etc.  My only purpose for doing this was to put together books for each surname with the above info in them for any of our relatives who are interested in having one - to enjoy at no cost.  I am doing them on my computer and putting them into a three ring notebook with pictures of the oldest ancestors from that line on the front of the book. My question is under those circumstances, is there anything wrong with listing everyone - including the living and with their birthday and birthplace - on the descendancy tree in each book, so they can all see who their cousins are? If legally, I can not put their birth info, is it all right to just put their names with no dates or places - just stating "living"?  And, if that is the case, is there some sort of software that one can use to print  just that "living", since I have all of these people in my Family Tree Maker?  What a shame to have to leave living people off after so many of them have shown such an interest in this project? I have gotten such conflicting data on this situation, I do not know what I should do. Any help is appreciated.  Thank you so much taking the time to read this lengthy letter.  Jackie Jacquel384@aol.com

    1. Re: Birthdate from deathdate??
    2. George Basden
    3. Hi Anna:  I come up with the same date as you do.  Begin involved in a lot of funerals with the American Legion, one of the things we have to do as Chaplain is figure the age.  Listed is an example of how we determine the age             Died    1998   07    04 Born    1924   01   14             Age        74  05   20+1  translates to 74 years, 5 months and 21 days old. The first column obviously represents the year born and died, the middle column represents the month, and the last column represents the days.  In my example you obvoiusly cannot take 14 days from 04 days, so then you move to the months column and change the 07 months to 06 months.  Since we work on 30 days per month, you then add 30 to the 04 which gives you 44 days. Since the individual was living the day he died, you then add 1 to the days column.  By the way, this is the same formula the military uses to determine the number of days service a person served. Hope this helps. George gebasden@worldnet.att.net <http://www.basden.com/>http://www.basden.com ---------- > From: Anna M.
