    3. Hi ! Great place.  Wondering if anyone would be able to help me with my Sherman ancestors. My gggrandfather changed the spelling of the name after he arrived here.  All I know about the original spelling is it started SKJ-------. Oluf Sherman -- b.7 June 1842 in Valer, Soler, Norway.  My gggrandmother was Juliane Hasler -- b. 16 Dec 1832 in Eidanger, Bratsberg (Telemark), Norway. They emigrated to America in 1869 with 1 infant -- my gfather, Maurice Oscar L. I'm not sure where they boarded a ship or where the arrived over here.  I do know they first settled in Scandinavia, WI>then Waupaca, WI.> finally stopping in Eau Claire, WI. in 1874. I'm just getting a good start so haven't been able to get to the LDS records.  TIA, any help is greatly appreciated.                                             Susan   <mailto:gramma_sue@prodigy.net>gramma_sue@prodigy.net

The borough of the Bronx is Bronx County, the borough of Brooklyn is Kings County, the borough of Queens is Queens County, and Staten Island is the borough and county of Richmond. Therefore, 3222 Bronx Blvd, Bronx NY would be in Bronx County. Do that make it clearer? I have a 1976 letter from them stating their new name Veterans Administration Hospital of Marion, Indiana 46952. At that time their director was C.L. Nordstrom. Hope this helps Zoe

    2. My thanks to Don and George for your suggestions in locating the Soldiers' Home. Since I do not know in what county it was located, I'm still searching for that bit of info. Have dashed off an e-mail to the Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs and will write the Indiana DAV over the weekend. Have another idea or two that I might also try. Will let you know if - no - when I am successful in locating this facility. Wish me luck! Edna

    3. Some genealogy software programs recognize this problem and will automatically take care of it for you. For example, Personal Ancestral File does NOT take care of this problem, but the program Ancestral Quest does. Check out the capabilities of your genealogy software -- a solution may be simpler than you think. 3. Very good question. I'd like to know how people handle that, plus I have another question I'd like ideas on. What do you do about those facts that people don't want made public, even to their own relatives? I have one surname with several secrets. One was a girl who was made to give up her baby because she was a minor in the 1960s (and not married, of course) . I doubt if her daughter knows about this, and I sure don't want this to be the way she finds out she has a half brother somewhere! One great uncle had a wife and two children by his first wife. I don't know if the second family of 7 children even knew about the first family. When I've asked for their family's info, no one ever mentioned it. I sure didn't! Actually I have two men that are like that--two families, but I don't know that the second family knows about the first family. One I was told about by other family members, the other I found on my own by accident while looking up other records. I started doing genealogy about 3 years ago. I guess after Dad decided I was going to pursue this hobby for more than a year, Dad told me and my siblings about his first marriage. It was quite a shock, but could have been worse if I'd found it on my own later without any explanation from him. I did come across it in my research later. I'm so glad he decided to tell us himself, and in the long run I think he felt better for having gotten it off his chest. Quite a burden for over 50 years! I want people to be able to confide in me with the family secrets, when I ask questions about family history, so I feel like I have to be very careful, but how do you reconcile the "factual version" with the "edited version" of your family tree ? I'd really like to hear some ideas on this one. Linda ---------- From: by way of Genealogy Records Service <info@genrecords.com> Sent: Friday, July 03, 1998 2:18 PM To: GenTips-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Listing the Living Hi: Is there anyone who can tell me what is the proper way to address this situation? I have collected thousands of names in doing my 10 family surnames.  Have collected this info via phone, mail and personal interviews, collected all sorts of stories, articles, photos,  pictures of headstones, etc.  My only purpose for doing this was to put together books for each surname with the above info in them for any of our relatives who are interested in having one - to enjoy at no cost.  I am doing them on my computer and putting them into a three ring notebook with pictures of the oldest ancestors from that line on the front of the book. My question is under those circumstances, is there anything wrong with listing everyone - including the living and with their birthday and birthplace - on the descendancy tree in each book, so they can all see who their cousins are? If legally, I can not put their birth info, is it all right to just put their names with no dates or places - just stating "living"?  And, if that is the case, is there some sort of software that one can use to print  just that "living", since I have all of these people in my Family Tree Maker?  What a shame to have to leave living people off after so many of them have shown such an interest in this project? I have gotten such conflicting data on this situation, I do not know what I should do. Any help is appreciated.  Thank you so much taking the time to read this lengthy letter.  Jackie Jacquel384@aol.com ==== GenTips Mailing List ==== Support online research! 1. Re: group adoption!
    2. I'm up for this adoption thing, but I want you to know you just inherited some really troublesome surnames. To wit: KNOER From Switzerland. Three brothers immigrated 1855: Johan (John), Josef (Joseph) and Jakob (Jacob) gg-grandpa. John last located in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio 1880. Disappeared to ???? Joseph died 1863, while serving as corporal with 14th Ohio Infantry company H. Left behind one son Christian, who was married in Ottawa County, Ohio in 1881. Jacob lived in Swiss Colony in Franklin County, Tennessee until his death in 1904. Most descendants known and located. WEISBROD. From Reilingen, Germany. Just help me PROVE that Sophia (gg-grandma) is the daughter of Jacob John Weisbrod, who immigrated to Fenton, Kossuth County, Iowa in 1853 (with brother Johan Konrad), and we have this family traced back to 1610. RICH. Cherokee tribe. Located Washington County, Arkansas, then Grayson County, Texas. Probably originally from Tennessee or North Carolina. MITCHELL. From Scotland, near Edinburg. Immigrant ancestor, William Kerr Mitchell. Son, Alexander Mitchell, born 18 Aug 1845. Get this, the Scottish database incorrectly identifies his parents as John Mitchell and Jessie Kidd. What is the next course to take to trace the family in Scotland? TVINNEREIM. Tvinnereim, Nordjford, Norway to Webster, Day County, South Dakota. Can anyone understand the Norwegian Census??? There you have it, new cousins. A whole new set of stumbling blocks and brick walls. Isn't this fun? Beth

    3. New York City consisted only of Manhattan and part of the Bronx up until 1898, when the consolidation of Greater New York took place. Then, Brooklyn (Kings Co), Staten Island (Richmond), part of Queens (Queens Co), and the rest of the Bronx came together to form the present-day city. The eastern part of Queens County voted not to consolidate with the rest of the city, and became Nassau County. Hope this helps. 3. Hey Rusty, Keep looking! I just linked two lines together that I have been trying to link for at least over 6 years and I know one of my husbands cousins that had been trying to link them together for many more than I! In doing so found out that some neighbors a few doors down the street are my husbands 2 cousins! They would never have known this had a "total stranger" not seen my name somewhere on the internet and sent me an email questioning whether our lines were somehow connected! Turns out her husband is another of my husbands second cousins! You cant ever give up on any way of possibly finding info! Sooner or later it does work and you do find someone that has info that ties it all together! Good Luck! 3. I am by NO means an expert on this, but my question would have to be this? Why, if this is only for family, would it matter WHAT you listed.? I would think you could tell potty training stories for private family viewing if you wanted to! Now, if you intend to submit this for publication ie WFT CD's or something, then that should be another matter, but to give as gifts to family? This is the 4th of JULY when we celebrate our freedoms! Then Internet is full of things that SHOULD be illegal, but are not because of 'freedom of speech" why should this be different? Marcia Moore Collins
