Check out the BLM-ES, GLO Records at <http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/> You can download the original patents to view and print at home or order them online or by snail mail. This site is for the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. It can be searched by name, county, patent number, etc. Good luck. Original Message: I have found three Arkansas Land Patents I would like to see but am confused about where to order the files. National Archives says they have them. Does anyone know if that is Textual Reference Branch (NNR-1-Land), Washington, D. C. 20408. Fees for service is not mentioned. Does anyone know?
Someone recently asked on the list about solicitation. Here's my policy, yes, it is solicitation but as long as it relates to genealogy, I have no problem unless it was posted more than once. Now, that doesn't mean I want GenTips to be full of ads for products but we do need to know about products available on the market. Tracey >Is this a form of solicitation? Dear LouDean, In my book, "A to Zax, A comprehensive Dictionary for Genealogists & Historians" it has listed under the section "English-Dutch First Names" : Ida = Eytie, Ydje So, you could be right, the "E" in her initials could stand for the name "Eytie" Hope this helps, Diane

Last month we announced we were working on opening county web sites for Iowa and Virginia, and that they would be up for adoption. We've now completed opening all Virginia and Iowa county web sites. If anyone is interested in adopting one please visit the IAGenExchange at http://www.genexchange.com/ia/ or the VAGenExchange at http://www.genexchange.com/va/ and select the Counties Selection Link at the top middle of the page. Also, we'll be opening other states for adoption at a rate of one or two per month until all Fifty states are opened and adopted. Then we'll begin opening other Country GenExchange sites. In addition to Iowa and Virginia, New York is also open and can be found at http://www.genexchange.com/ny/ If anyone is interested in learning more about the long range plans of the GenExchange, please read back issues of our monthly newsletter--the Exchange--at http://www.genexchange.com/gesr/archive.cfm, our FAQ at http://www.genexchange.com/faq.cfm, and out "About the GenExchange" page at http://www.genexchange.com/volunteers.cfm Thank you. ----- Anthony Abby Genealogy Exchange & Surname Registry - http://www.genexchange.com GenExchange FAQ - http://www.genexchange.com/faq.cfm About the GenExchange - http://www.genexchange.com/volunteers.cfm

Hello, Does anyone know, or can anyone direct me to a site where I might find out, the origin of the given name Ida? That was my great grandmother's name. But it puzzles me why at the age of 10 she was listed in the 1880 Census as Sarah E. P. WHITLEY. She was known as Ida in her adulthood, and that name is on her tombstone, death certificate, obituary, her second marriage certificate, and later Census records. It occurred to me that either the E. or the P. could stand for a longer name that was later shortened to Ida (as, for example, Elizabeth becomes Beth or Rebecca become Becky. Her mother, who was Marilsa in 1880 but Rilsa in 1900, provides another example.) I would appreciate any information or comments anyone can provide on this matter! Thanks a lot! LouDean

All VA cemeteries have a database of those buried there. Some are now also on Kiosk that is computer operated to make finding a grave easier. I don't know if all of them have converted yet but it is my understanding they eventually will all be on this system. Jefferson Barracks National cemetery here in St. Louis is on this system and it is great. Once you find the individual, it prints out a small map showing where the grave is located and how to get there. Correction. The Coast Guard does not come under the Department of Treasury. It comes under the Department of Transportation except in wartime, then it comes under the Department of the Navy. I work for the USCG (15 years) so the USCG is my source for this info. The American Merchant Marine falls under the Department of Commerce during peace time. The U.S. Coast Guard is under the Department of the Treasury. During WW-II certain members of the Merchant Marine were employed by the War Shipping Administration or Office of Defence Transportation. Under contract to the ODT they may have been assigned to U.S. Army Transportation Service or the Naval Transportation Service. If these persons had service aboard oceangoing voyages engaged in foreigh, near foreign, intercoastal, costal or coastwise service may be eligible for certain veteran benefits and a military discharge certificate. Such service would be found in thier "Seamans Papers". Period covered is from 7 Dec 1941 to 15 Aug 1945; except for those who may have been captured and held as prisoners of war. Hi! Although I've been interested in genealogy for years, I am just now getting 'addicted' to my new hobbie. Any suggestions on how to get information from the country of Hungary? I've tried going to their home page with no results. Kathy
> I have searched the index for many names that were not there. I knew them > to be dead, with ss#s, and no one collecting any benefits from them. It was > my understanding from what I had read about this index, that any death > benefit issued for a social security number holder would be included on the > list. I would be curious to know why so many are missing from this index. The following is an explanation from a Dear Myrtle column found at http://www.ancestry.com/columns/myrtle/july98/my980706.htm >From these references one can see that while the SSDI is an extensive listing of deaths in the US, it is far from complete. Whether due to human error, or the fact that the death simply wasn't reported to the SSA, millions of names do not appear on the Death Master File. In such cases, researchers will move to other records created at the time their ancestor lived in order to reconstruct major events in his life and to provide clues to earlier generations. I just received a long awaited packet of info from NARA about my grgrandfathers pension for service in the Civil War. Lots of interest but still not one mention of his parent's names. I've done everything I know but I can't get their names. Any suggestions? I've only been at this a few months and I'm really stuck! He was George Downey, the family was Protestant Irish, and he was born February 7, 1843. I have reason to think the family may have moved to Kane Co., Illinois, when he was a boy.He also lived in Appleton WI and in Tekonsha MI. He died in Wasco, Kane Co., Illinois in 1920.His wife was Mary Anne Whitney, descended from the John Whitney line of WaterTown Mass. Can anyone connect or advise?
