    3. To Ellen Parker: Trust me, NO ONE thinks Hitler was a great man--no one who can read TIME magazine anyway...But he did have a HUGE impact on the past century. In your message, you even had an example of his effect on you and your family..... He, unfortunately, was an extremely influential man. 3. THIS DOES EFFECT OUR GENEALOGY. Adolf Hitler is in the #1spot to be on the cover of Time. If you want to see someone there that has effected our forefather then you are looking at this wrong. Adolf Hitler is the cause of my not knowing very much about or getting very much information from my grandfather. He served in World War 1 and was gassed and left me at a very young age. He also effected each and every one of us. I do not want to see him to be put on Time as a great person. Please take another look at this. Thanks Ellen Parker

    1. Researching LEDBETTER*BEASLEY*BOMAR*TILL*MCCOY*IN*TX*TN*MS*HELP!
    2. Amen to Scheffler's message requesting we all use the Subject line. I seldom open a message without a subject line because my time online is limited. Since very few people on this list seem to be using the subject line, maybe some folks don't know what it is. If you do, stop here and ignore my attempt to help others if you like. I was once new to computers, email and the interenet so I know how it feels scratch my head, hmmmmm, subject line??? Stop scratchin and relax.... just look below the line you type in the email address of the person you are sending your email to and you should find a line that says Subject:: Use that line to type on in an attempt to capture the attention of those of us who don't open a message that doesn't tell us the subject of the message. As an example, if you type in Researching LEDBETTER*BEASLEY*BOMAR*TILL*MCCOY*IN*TX*TN*MS*HELP! in that line like I did today, you will be more likely to catch the attention of others looking for the same folks. By giving them the states you think they would be in, you will also save them and you a lot of time. Or, you could just say, for instance, What is an archived message?? or How do I copy something from here to a file? Ignoring messages without subject lines is also a way to avoid all the arguments folks get into about subjects you don't care about and that should be sent direct to the person they are arguing with instead of all of us! The * between the names, I believe, keeps the message from being picked up by rootsweb computer system and placed in the archives under each name listed - like today I wouldn't want this message to go to the archives. That also helps save space in the rootsweb computer system which helps keep it fast and easy to use. The only time I wouldn't use the * is when I do want a message to be archived under each name and, as a courtesy, I should limit the names even then. Happy Hunting...Jackie.... just a lady who likes to make the traveling easier out here!

    3. Subject: Problems When Subscribing to the Digest Someone wrote: > It sure seems like a lot of people are quitting this digest. Could it be >that it is not useful or fuctionable anymore?? I am using the digest version on several lists to cut down on the volume of emails to read through. It is often difficult to determine who the sender of each of the senders is though. When you get the digest list the messages they are numbered with their subject at the top of the digest. But each message is then just divided by a line with no clue to the originator or subject (or it's number) unless the postee included that in the body of the message. (And if they forget to change the subject title...) I try to be mindful of this when posting to the list, but I have to admit I forget sometimes. Often on lists such as GenTips and GenNewbie there are over 20 messages to each digest. The farther down the list the message is, the harder it becomes to figure out which one (listed at the top) it is. I have sometimes decided not to reply to a message because I couldn't figure out who had sent it and it did not seem like it needed to be posted for everyone on the list. I would help if those that do reply did not quote the whole email volume.

    1. Digest vs. List mode
    2. MScheffler
    3. If one is a contributing member of Rootsweb, one can subscribe to the list mode instead of the digest mode. When replying to a digest or a list message, one should put a subject for their message in the subject line. The digest number or other meaningless subject for the reply makes no sense and many people will not read a message without a meaningful subject line. M. Scheffler

    1. verifying medieval lines (was: verity of FTM records)
    2. Dolly Ziegler
    3. Good morning to Loretta and the list. I'd say that *anyone's* CD compilation of ancestry needs confirmation, documentation, before you accept it. And yes, it is entirely possible that your friend really does have this distinguished ancestry. (Though we all know how puffery--and worse--can get into a family history.) For investigating medieval lines, may I suggest a small book, _Ancestral roots of certain American colonists who came to America before 1700_. By Frederick Lewis Weis, seventh edition with additions and corrections by Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr. Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1992. $25 + shipping $3.50. (1-800-296-6687) [Many genealogy-aware libraries will have this book, but I suggest you USE ONLY SEVENTH EDITION.] Usual disclaimer, I have no financial interest in this book or the publisher. Apparently, real medieval genealogists regard this book as the current authority on these lines. And about 67 lines, known as "gateway ancestors," are "discussed." Most are New England, but I see some Virginia and Maryland lineages. If you get this book, PLEASE read the preface before you dive in. And to answer everyone's first question -- the index refers to "lines," not pages. Another well-regarded book, with which I'm not familiar but I mention it on the strength of the reputation of its compiler, Gary Boyd Roberts [of the NEHGS in Boston]: _The royal descents of 500 immigrants to the American colonies of the U.S._ Hope this is useful. Cheers, Dolly in Maryland On Mon, 3 May 1999, Loretta Casella wrote: > (snip)long family history on a CD by Family Tree Maker but it includes the > following: William the Conqueror, St. Margaret of > Scotland, Otto the Great, Alfred the Great etc. > > This seems suspicious and she would like to know either how she can verify > any of this, without doing her own research or what the odds are that such a > distinguished panel are in her ancestry. 3. Hi, listers..I hope this is not too far off topic. A friend has just found a long family history on a CD by Family Tree Maker but it includes the following: William the Conqueror, St. Margaret of Scotland, Otto the Great, Alfred the Great etc. This seems suspicious and she would like to know either how she can verify any of this, without doing her own research or what the odds are that such a distinguished panel are in her ancestry. We are both novices so we appreciate any and all replies, especially if this is a particularly stupid question! 3. Hi All: I have a Microtek SlimScan C3 scanner. It really works great but I need some additional knowledge to obtain maximum use. I have cked all the web sites for Microtek, Hot tips, &tc. PROBLEM: I have a completed form where all the questions have been answered. I am able to scan it with no problem. I would like to "edit" the form to remove what has been typed previously. My scanner is new, I may have a software pkg that came with it that will do what I want but so far, I haven't found one. Does anyone know how to change the scanned image size? Thank you all in advance for your help. Paul
