    1. AOL's Genealogy Forum NEWS is on the web!
    2. Dear Friends, Thought you might like to hear the exciting news! Myrt :) --------------------- DearMYRTLE's DAILY GENEALOGY COLUMN Neat Things I've Read Lately: Genealogy Forum NEWS 6/99 DearREADERS, For years, members of AOL's Genealogy Forum (Keyword: roots) have enjoyed reading the monthly Genealogy Forum NEWS. Now, for the first time, the NEWS is available on the Internet for all to enjoy! This month's issue is located at: http://www.genealogyforum.com/gfnews/june99/index0699.htm There are plans to put the previously archived issues on the site within the near future. While some of the articles may refer to AOL members-only options like chats and message boards, much of the content concerning "how to" do genealogy research will benefit all readers. As a member of the editorial staff, I know that some GREAT things are slated for upcoming issues. If you'd like to contribute, the deadline is the 20th of the month for the next month's issue. Send e-mail to the lead editor [email protected] or I can certainly forward things to her! Now, I think you folks will begin to meet our talented Genealogy Forum staffers. Next month they plan to link the host's web pages, which include surname pages and many USGenWeb counties. Long active on AOL, many of the staffers also lend their support to Internet-based genealogy sites. Its all part of learning and sharing! 1. becoming physician
    2. Just read my GenTips for May 19 and saw your notice. Several weeks ago I posted a two part writing about the Western Pennsylvania Hospital and the first medical school recognized in the 'Colonies' US. There were several methods by which a man became a doctor---by just practicing, by apprenticeship, and by school either here or overseas. If you contact the Antiquity Center, West Penn Hospital, 4815 Liberty AV, Pittsburgh PA 15224 with your questions, I am sure they will either be able to answer your questions or advise what booklets hold the information. 1. Website for Canada Info
    2. I came across a website the other night I would like to share. It has actual dates of birth, baptism, marriage and immigration online. You can conduct a free search for basic information, and for a small fee, can access the whole record. I found many, many dates that I needed for my French Canadian ancestors. It's all pre-1800. Navigate the site thoroughly. Some of the info is within other pages. http://www.genealogy.umontreal.ca/en/default.htm Patty

    1. Vital Records Databases at the GenExchange
    2. >From time to time someone writes and asks where a death index, or marriage index, or birth index can be found online for a given state or county. One place where you can find indexes for nearly every type of important vital record is at the GenExchange (http://www.genexchange.com) The USGenExchange is organized by state, and can be located at http://www.genexchange.com/us.cfm. We have been busy opening county web sites, which are open for adoption, in each state also, however not every state has had their county sites completed at this time. Those states which have already had their counties opened are marked on the USGenExchange page. Records in states that have county web sites opened are searchable on a county by county basis, and states that do not have county web sites opened are searchable on a state wide basis. Each search form gives you several options by which you can search for records. To narrow down a search to a given area or person, enter in as much information in the search form as you can. For a more broad search, enter in as little information in the search form as possible, or enter no information in the search form to browse the records. Here is a list of records databases you will find in each county and state web site. Associations & Societies Baptismal Records Bio's & Historical Accounts Birth Index Burial Index Cemeteries Census Records Churches Church Membership Rolls Courthouses Deaths/Obits Index Funeral Homes Historical Places Immigration & Naturalization Land and Deed Records Libraries & Archives Marriage Index Military Records Museums Newspapers Queries Schools Ships Passenger Lists Surname Index Tax Records Towns/Cities Yearbooks And More Since the GenExchange is a community project and currently has just over 300 volunteers and project members, many databases for a given area or type may not have much data. The amount of data in a given database is directly attributable to the amount of work done (or lack of) by a volunteer, visitor, or county/state contact for that area. Several counties in each state that have had its county web sites opened remain available for adoption if you are interested in being a part of the GenExchange, or helping in any way. For specific record counts in each database, please read the latest issue of our monthly newsletter at http://www.genexchange.com/gesr/may1999.cfm. You'll find those numbers in our Geeks Corner column. ----- Anthony Abby Genealogy Exchange & Surname Registry - http://www.genexchnage.com GenExchange FAQ - http://www.genexchange.com/faq.cfm How to get involved - http://www.genexchange.com/volunteers.cfm

    1. Records of Immigrants to Canada
    2. Hi everyone, For those of you who are researching ancestors in Canada, ancestry.com added a new data base today that might be of help. The data base is free for 10 days from being added. The site is listed on the right hand side of the screen, so all you need to do is double click under it and when the screen comes up, type in the surname you are researching. Below is the url and data discription. Ruth in NC e-mail: [email protected] Rootsweb Donor NGS Member URL: http://www.ancestry.com Records of Immigrants to Canada Description: Historically, Canada has been the destination for millions of immigrants from around the world seeking a better life in North America. Compiled from a variety of sources, this database is a collection of over 83,000 records between 1780 and 1906 relating to immigrants to Canada. Researchers will find the name of the immigrant and year and source of the original record. The entries in this database are not complete transcriptions of the original records; an e-mail link is provided at the bottom of each results page for those who would like to purchase a more detailed electronic transcript for a particular entry. This database can be immensely helpful for researchers with Canadian ancestors. We will periodically be adding more Canadian immigration data to our online library, so return to Ancestry.com often.

    1. Balalaika
    2. Virginia Weiss
    3. A balalaika is NOT a card game ... it is a Russian musical instrument, somewhat like a guitar but with a lovely, distinctive sound. It usually has a triangular-shaped body and only 3 strings. Sometimes played alone, often to accompany a singer. Hear it once and you will never forget how nice it sounds. VIRGINIA
