I have found a site for Civil War and have found several of my ancestry names on it, but how can I find if these are my ancestors?
Disregard my message - I did not read the last part. I made a copy. Thanks Viola Moslein
Please send me a copy and how do I subscribe? This sounds wonderful. Thanks Viola Moslein ([email protected])
Good morning all, I found a neat newsletter that's put out daily called " Family Tree Finders". Yesterday's issue dealt with cemeteries & obituaries. Several online sites were listed for reference. Each day they answer a different question.I have included sub. info. below. I can forward this to those of you who would to look at this newsletter. I don't know if there is an archive for back issues or not. I am not affiliated with this newsletter or do I gain anything from subscriptions. I hope no one considers this spam because this is not my intention. I get so much useful information from this list that I wanted to give something back. Have a wonderful & safe Saturday!! Hello, In order to train staff members at the Provo Utah South Family History Center -- and train other folks out there who need succinct, step-by-step lessons -- I'm posting on the Web a 30-lesson guide on how to do genealogy research. About half the lessons are posted now. When I've finished posting all the lessons, the site will contain the following subjects: Unit 1: Gathering and Organizing Family Records * Starting Out Introduction to the Family History Library The Research Process The Golden Rule of Genealogy * Identify What you Know: Recording Information Golden Rule of Genealogy: Work from the Known to the Unknown Using Forms * Family Interviews Correspondence Types Process Correspondence & Guerilla Tactics Equipment for Oral Interviews * Organizing Your Files Motivations Components of a Filing System Instructions * Personal Ancestral File (PAF): Basic Editing Creating a PAF file Adding & Editing Individuals Unlinking & Deleting Individuals * Documenting Sources in PAF 3 PAF 3 Advancements PAF 3 Shortcomings Workarounds * PAF Backups Unit 2: LDS Survey Sources: Searching, Downloading, & Submitting * Ancestral File: Searching * Ancestral File: Downloading GEDCOM Files * PAF: Importing and Exporting GEDCOM Files * PAF: Merging & Linking Individuals * Ordinance Index (The new IGI), Social Security Death Index, Military Index, and Scottish Church Records * Submissions: Ancestral File, the IGI, and the Golden Rule * Ancestral File: Submitting & Correcting * Submitting to the IGI & Ordinance Index * Vital Records Index: North America Unit 3: Finding Aids * Selecting Record Types & Using Research Guides * SourceGuide * Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) * Finding the Right Locality Gazetteers AniMap Handy Book Red Book Maps Unit 4: Using Major Source Types * Census/Tax Records * Vital Records * Church Records * Probates * History * Biography * Family History/Genealogy * Periodicals/Newspapers * Obituaries * Bible Records * Land Records * Court Records * Directories * Military Records * Immigration/Emigration Records The course is at http://www.acceleratedgenealogy.com. Unit 4 should get pretty interesting, as I'll be scanning in original records to teach what one can find in each type. I'll also be covering special issues, like how to order Civil War pensions from the National Archives, how to map a deed on a range and township map, and how to trace immigrants using Gerald Haslam's "prongs on a plug" approach. -Michael
Version 5.3 of the U.S. Civil War Units File (June 23, 1999) is available on the web and will soon be available from the Rootsweb server (see below for addresses). The Civil War Units File (CWUNITS) lists people who have information on a unit or ship (often rosters, battles, etc.) and are willing to help others research it. Some are experts; most are "just" helpful fellow researchers. If you see a listing for a unit you are interested in, you can send the contact person email and share information. There are also listings for battles, organizations, counties, ethnic groups, etc. The following addresses no longer work and I was unable to find the people, so I have deleted their listings. If you are one of these people or know how to contact one, please email me. [email protected] (Charles Gaulden) [email protected] [email protected] (Jedediah Mannis) [email protected] [email protected] (Jeff Guernsey) [email protected] [email protected] CWUNITS is five files (plus one for the intro and one for the FAQ) as follows: Part Filename Contents 0 CWUNITS introduction only 1 CWUNITS1 USA national & states A-I 2 CWUNITS2 USA states K-N 3 CWUNITS3 USA states O-W 4 CWUNITS4 CSA national & states A-M 5 CWUNITS5 CSA states N-V Q FAQ frequently asked questions and answers Parts 1-5 include the intro as well as the listings. Within a state the units are organized by number (1st Infantry, etc.). The Civil War Units File is on the American Civil War Homepage: http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/warweb.html under the heading Rosters & Regimental Histories. I don't run this site. To get the latest version by email at any time: Send email to [email protected] (Upper and lower case count in the email address and everywhere else.) Subject: archive Text is: get genealog.cwunits get genealog.cwunits1 get genealog.cwunits2 get genealog.cwunitsq etc. The period (.) has to be after genealog and before the file name. To get a listing of all of the ROOTS-L files, send the command get roots-l.catalog Another way to obtain files is via anonymous ftp. To do this, ftp to ftp.rootsweb.com using "anonymous" (withOUT quotes!) as your username and your net address as your password. Issue the command: cd /pub/roots-l/genealog/ You may issue a dir command to see a listing of files, use ctrl-s to temporarily halt the dir command, and ctrl-q to resume the dir command. The command for retrieving a file via ftp is: get genealog.filename substituting, of course, the proper filename for "filename" above. Notice the PERIOD between "genealog" and the filename. Then issue a quit command to exit. If you have a file you would like included in the GENEALOG area, please send email to the Genealog administrator, Vicki Lindsay: [email protected] describing the file. Please do _not_ send her a file without asking. Questions and new listings for the CWUNITS file go to me. Carol Botteron (ancestors on both sides) [email protected]
Paul, I export the file and save it as an rtf document (rich text format) in My Documents. Then I can highlight it and use file/send to an email recipient. You should be able to open the .jpg files downloaded. Then you'll be able to manipulate them so that you can read or print them. I'm not sure what the Iexpore is, but if you check out any of the software sections of RootsWeb or like sites, you will probably find it. There are several Internet Explores on Microsoft's website. Hope that helps! Toni
It has been a short period since I used your site but, the last time I was on you had listings of geneology sits on the internet. It was great help. HAt happened to it? I need to be able to reach some of the various sites and I have no clue where to find them. Can you help me? Edwina Moody [email protected]
oh wow, this may be difficult....I have gotten marriage licenses before with only the wifes first name and not knowing the actual marriage date. I would call the county clerk first and see if they are going to be able to help you out. Somewhere I found this and it has landed in my notes: June 1923: British Immigrants reported skirting Ellis Island coming to U.S. thru Canada. Helpful?? Carol T
Any one: I would appreciate your advice please: A "cousin" has e-mailed several messages saved in .htm with attachments of documents saved in .jpg. Some of the documents when opened are too large for my screen so that parts of the document are cut off losing much of the information. In some cases the printed letters are very large, several times more than normal. Is there a way for me to recover the missing information by using my scanner or must these files be rescanned or ? I saved some of these messages as htm and some as jpg . The latter cannot be opened and read as a pop up window tells me it requires (iexplore.exe)to open. Where will I find this? Have I erred in how these documents were saved? My PC is using Win 98, Netscape,Umax(Astra 610P)scanner. Hoping that this explanation is clear and that some one can advise me as what to do. Thank you . Gordon
Does anyone have this version. In printing the Family Group Sheet, it will print the Spouses with the Parents, but WILL NOT PRINT THE SPOUSES, WITH THE CHILDREN LISTED BELOW THE PARENTS. I sent an inquiry to FTM and they replied it was an omission on that version and agreed to my dilemma. I spent $89 to update to this version and now it has a problem, sounds like it doesn't matter unless I want to spend more money and update to the next version. What upsets me is that the older version, printed the Spouses of the Parents and the spouses of the Children. So I updated, and now there is an omission. Has anyone else had this problem. There is no way to add it either, as under Contents where you normally could add individuals to include, it is blurred/dim and you cannot add. Thanks for any help. In a message dated 6/22/99 3:49:44 AM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << Dear Sirs, >> Communication is the biggest tool you will use in genealogy and a lot of it will be in writing. I would suggest that you refrain from gender specific terms. But do what makes you feel the most comfortable. I would start with anyone alive. Get all the info you can from them. Dates, places, and my favorite, family lore. If you have any luck like I have had, you'll find someone in the family who has already done some of the work. SSDI or the Social Security Death Index (RootsWeb.com is one place to find it) has been a great source of those in the last 40 years. They have prewritten letters that you can click on and printout with the persons info right on it. Then mail it off (with a check) and in about 6 weeks you'll get the persons SS-5 form (application) which has been very helpful for me. Join a mailing list like this one. I have learned sooooo much from these lists, I would still be in the dark on a lot of things. Scan the web too. There are many sights that will give you ideas on where and how to look for information. Also look for your family names on those sites. You'll be surprised how many relatives you run into! But nothing will beat going to the local or state historical society and looking through the census, newspapers, microfilm, etc. Something about seeing some old time handwriting that brings it all home. I believe it makes it so much more real than just internet gathering. Hope that helps, Toni Wenzell
Hi All: I am using FTW v6.0. I want to "print" the family tree to a file so that I can then copy and send it via email. It this is not the right procedure please be kind enough to suggest an alternative. Thanks in advance. Paul

Anyone who is interested in their French Canadian roots and would like to download copies of Cyprien Tanguay's Dictionnaire Genealogique Familles Canadiennes can do so at this website. I just found it last nite. You can download all 7 volumes or just the ones you need. It downloads in PDF format, so make sure you have Acrobat Reader available on your computer. ANd it takes a long time, so be patient. Patty <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~canqc/tanguay.htm">Dictionnaire Tanguay</A> http://www.rootsweb.com/~canqc/tanguay.htm
