Hi Jean, It sounds like you're having just loads of fun! The Scottish Church records can be accessed at LDS website by going to http://www.familysearch.org/Browse/browse.asp and checking the links from there. Good luck on the rest of the stuff! --Carol > I want to check out some Scottish Church records. How can I access them on > the LDS online search? The previous version of PAF was DOS based. Is that a possible choice for you? Denise Mumphrey (by way of Tracey Converse ) wrote: > Hi, > > I have a question I hope someone can help me with. Hi Listers, I want to check out some Scottish Church records. How can I access them on the LDS online search? I went in and checked religions, and they could not recognize the request for Scottish Church records. The FHC has them, I must be missing a step. I know there is a Scottish list, but I am snowed under and had to drop it. I am having problems with PA. research. I see I can send in $25 and request someone in the Historical Society to do research. However, twice now I have sent money for death certificates in Kansas and New Hampshire only to be told they cannot find them. I can understand that, but I had one great-grandfather who died in 1927 only 20 days after my great-grandmother. They found hers, but not his. My problem in Pennsylvania is a great-grandfather, Frederick DRESSLER born in 1832 in Union Co., PA. I found a George Dressler born in 1802 and Sarah FISCHER who had a son Frederick with the same exact birth date in Union Co. PA. Then when I got his death certificate from Kansas, it said his parents were John DRESSLER and Mary CRUM. One of these has to be wrong, I do not know who gave the birth information to the funeral home, it did not say. The Union Co. birth records were supposed to be extracts of actual vital records. I am willing to pay for their time, but wonder if they will have information that far back. Especially if records are missing as late as 1927. On backups, I have always made genealogy backups and rotate them on ten floppy disks each time I work on my program. However, I had my old PAF and Ancestral Quest always backed up. Then I made the mistake of trying to go from Windows 95 to 98. I must have got a bad program as it locked at 14 minutes to go each time we tried to install it. Finally a tech said I need 64 RAM although the program said it could be done with a minimum of 32 RAM. After struggling to install it for a month, I returned it and they refunded my money. Then I added 32 RAM, making it 64 RAM. Meanwhile my Windows 95 was corrupted. I had to erase my hard drive and reformat my hard drive. I had bought a new Ancestral Quest version 3.0 to add with the Windows 98, and now want to use it for the Windows 95. My old AQ and PAF had been corrupted and I could not transfer my information. My tape backup restored my pedigree information for the parents and child I am descended from on each generation and their notes. However, all siblings, spouses, and allied families and notes were missing for 14 generations. I still had the back up floppies, so we reinstalled the old AQ and used the latest 1999 floppy backup made before the 98 problem and sent a GEDCOM to my new program. To sum this up I have some kind of gremilin in this computer. Old information deleted in 1997 is there, new people, dates, places, and notes added in 1997 through 1999 are missing. However, I had sent a GEDCOM for my Genealogical Quarterly in 2 months ago and it is correct. I do not understand how I can have changes made in 1997 back in my notes and dates and all new information is missing. I am finding wierd things everyday, it does not make sense. Meanwhile, I am going through each generation and reentering all notes and trying to correct changes made over the last two years. Good thing genealogy is so much fun, or this computer would be long gone. By the way, maybe we should take up a collection for poor Bill Gates. We were given a phone number so we could talk to a tech. Evidently they only have one, and his mail box was always full. I am not about to pay Bill $35 otherwise for the privilege to call them for single problem. His program has already cost me enough. Regards, Jean Suman
Most of these lists have reminders to back up data and sad stories about data lost to computer problems. Some people back up entire hard drives and some just backup individual data. As long as one backs up their individual data files like genealogy database, Quicken or alternate financial program, word processing files, email messages, etc., one really does not need to back up their entire hard drive. Windows generally gets more unreliable over time, and many experts recommend reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling programs from your original installation disks yearly. You would likely not want to restore a whole system backup if you are reformatting or replacing the hard drive, because it would have the many problems developed over time that reformatting and reinstall is trying to solve. Most programs have a backup procedure under the file menu. I usually backup to zip drives because they hold large files, and I can keep most of my backups together in one place. For those having a USB port on their computer and no internal zip drive, the USB external zip drive is wonderful. It is almost as fast as the internal drive. Whatever media you use, make sure to have more than one backup for each program on more that one disk. Hard drives, floppy drives, zip drives can all fail. It is also good to rotate backup disks, and keep several over a period of time. That way if you have backed up a file that became corrupted before you backed up, an earlier backup may not be corrupted. Along with backing up, one wants to keep their virus software updated every month or two to prevent loses that can come about as the result of having a virus on your computer. I know Norton AntiVirus has free updates with the files updated monthly, and I believe the other major antivirus programs do also. And remember, back up your genealogy program after each session and before attempting to add gedcom files, pack your database, merge records, etc. It is too easy for something to go wrong. In fact always put a gedcom file in its own new database before trying to add it to your primary database. It will save you LOTS of grief. As someone earlier said, hard drives eventually do fail, sometimes when quite new. One should never neglect their regular backups. The process takes a few seconds and can save hours of grief. We all work too hard on our genealogy research to lose it to lack of preventative forethought. Margaret Scheffler
Hi, I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I have an Atari ST computer. What kind of Genealogy Programs are there out there for my computer? It's NOT ibm compatable at all... Thanks in advance, Denise Mumphrey [email protected]
Having a good genealogy program makes this addictive hobby more enjoyable. I have used FAMILY ORIGINS for several years as my primary program, although I have also tried out most of the better known programs. It is excellent both in terms of ease of use, yet with many advanced features for the seasoned genealogist. For those of you looking for a good inexpensive genealogy program that is easy to use, yet with many powerful features, I suggest FAMILY ORIGINS VERSION 6 which is now available from SoftKey. The SoftKey company sells older versions of standard computer programs for approximately $10 at stores such as Staples and Office Max. If you like it, you can later upgrade. I have upgraded to the latest version, but I would be perfectly happy with version 6 if upgrades were not available. For those of you who do not have a genealogy program, don't have a lot of money to spend, can't recommend highly enough this program. Those of you with other programs may want to try it also. The price is right! FAMILY ORIGINS is the best program I have seen for entering sources. You can easily enter a source for every fact. The more one works at this hobby, the more the need for this feature becomes apparent. It is easy to add notes as well and the program has a variety of useful books and lists including a "to do" list. I have over 15,000 names in my database, so give any program hard use. Version 6 runs on both Windows 3.1 as well as Windows 95/98, so those of you who do not have the latest equipment, can use it. I am not discouraging anyone from buying the current version which has even more features; just letting you know this is an inexpensive way to try out a program which may be new to you. And no, I am not a representative of either the SoftKey or Parsons companies, just a SATISFIED user. I use FTM for reading the Broderbund genealogy cdroms, but FAMILY ORIGINS for everything else. Parsons Technology sells the current version. Margaret Scheffler
Hello, I have seen several mentions of PAF 4.0 and it is even available for free to download. My question: I am using Family Tree Maker, would I (or should I) be interested in PAF 4.0 also? Isn't it a program very similar to FTM? Why would I want both? do they serve the same purpose? Is there someone out there that has used both? Which do you favor and why? Thanks for any reply. I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE CHANCES SINCE YOU HAVE CHANGED THE WAY YOU HAVE TO GET THE MESSAGES, TO READ THEM, SO I WILL HAVE TO UNSUBSCRIBE AS I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE A CHANCE OF GETTING A VIRUS. I don't know anything about iexplore.exe, but I use an inexpensive program called vueprint for my picture files including jpg. There are several other such programs you could try out and buy.

However it is not there or anywhere else to my knowledge. What am I missing here? Why should this be so difficult? Your help is greatly appreciated. This is a great program . In the past it has been a big help. Thanks very much. Gordon From the Find In it should be in the (C:)
Hello Everyone, I have a question for you: Is there some sort of revealing paperwork that might shed some addition light on my great grandfather's emigration to the US, like "immigration" papers, that might be obtained from Wash., D.C., or from the Immigration Dept.? Other than his Decl. of Intent, or his Nat. Papers, that is. He arrived in America on April 21, 1890, on board the "Rhaetia", and at that paricular time period, the transition from Castle Gardens to Ellis Island was taking place. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Thank you all for a terrific mailing list! Mary in Mich ([email protected])
Please don't be angry! I don't want to offend any of the wonderful people helping each other on this nice, useful list. This is meant as a helpful, useful suggestion. Please, create a new subject line, or copy the subject line on a particular message contained within the gentips digest. Many, many people on this list receive hundreds of messages daily and simply can't take the time to read messages with vague subject lines created when REPLY TO AUTHOR is chosen. That creates a subject line like this: RE: GENTIPS-D DIGEST V234#. Each digest contains numerous messages, leaving no way for someone else to easily see just what this reply is about. Each one of us would like our messages read by others who are interested or might help us. I am sure we all want to help others as we have been helped. I am sure I could contribute to this list more often if I could easily see what the messages are about. Thank you and I apologize if I have offended anyone. It was not my intent. Why do I have to open the file, and I have a Warning. If this is the way, the files are going to be from now on, I will have to unsubscribe. I can't take the chance of any virus . Before today, I could click on it and read it. Have you changed things again. I am researching the names Mueller and Schroeder. These are the names of my paternal grandfather and grandmother, respectively. Both families were German immigrants in the mid- to late 1800s and settled in midwestern states such as Wisconsin and South Dakota. I have more details, in case anyone needs additional information before determining there is a connection. Nancy Groves
