Well, I was certainly wrong about the availability of early US census records! They began in 1790 and have been done every ten years since, although the 1890 ones were mostly destroyed by fire (what is available of 1890, I don't know). And still, the newest census we can see at this time is 1920. --Carol
Hi Hope, I tried it and it worked for me. --Carol > Hi everyone, > > A few months back, a posting to the list was made regarding the GenExchange > Project. Hi Tasha, I believe 1870 is the earliest federal census here in the US. But states and or counties and sometimes cities or townships took their own censuses, earlier than that. 1920 is the newest one available as there is a 72-year privacy law for federal censuses before they are made available to the public. --Carol how far > back census records go back and where I could find them. how do i look up my last name?

For all searching French Canadian I just learned of a new website with actual scanned pages from documents containing surnames. Use the search prompt and the results will produce pages from books that contain your ancestors surname. Go to the blue hyperlink that shows the exact page of the match, at the bottom of each window. It's very easy !! <A HREF="http://www.canadiana.org/cgi-bin/ECO/mtq">Early Canadiana Online</A> http://www.canadiana.org/cgi-bin/ECO/mtq

Barb, Try one of these sites for ordering vital records. With some states you can order on line with a credit card. http://www.vitalchek.com/ http://www.vitalrec.com/ http://www.hlth.gov.bc.ca/vs/admin/vs_us.html Jim in the Philippines >______________________________X-Message: #7 >Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 00:27:34 -0500 >From: [email protected] (by way of Tracey Converse <[email protected]>) >To: [email protected] >Message-Id: <[email protected]> >Subject: need Illinois address >Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed > >How would I get the address' for each state to send for a birth or death >record? The Freebies for Genealogists site http://freebies.genealogy.org has just been updated. The new links can be accessed by clicking the latest addtions link in the top left hand corner of the main page. The additions include the widely acclaimed Personal Ancestral File and the IGI online. John Oyston
Try "The Handy Book for Genealogists" which is available at most if not all LDS Family History Centers. There are other books like this now. That one, though, has been around for a long time. --Carol

In Illinois, you would have to go to the county seat and look up the birth, marriage, and death record. In some counties, the record is a computer print out sitting out on a counter where the public can access them easily. In others you have to ask for it. Good Luck.
