    1. Submitted info. to large databases
    2. MScheffler
    3. Many of us have made progress on our family research due to the kindness of others in sharing information. On several lists recently have been discussions on information submitted to various large databases collected from many individuals whether it be Broderbund/FTM for their pedigree cds, LDS Ancestral File or some of the others. There are in addition other large databases such as those on www.ancestry.com, KindredKonnections, and GenServ. I believe none of these verify any of the material submitted, so it is up to the submitters to verify what they submit BEFORE they contribute it. I personally submit my pedigree information to GenServ at www.genserv.com. I particularly like this database because it is not for profit and does not allow downloading of someone's entire database file. One contributes a database and pays $12 per YEAR to continue use. Submitting is easily done with a gedcom file. The first month or two is free. One accesses the data by sending for an index report of a particular name. Then you can order by email reports, one of which is similar to a family group sheet. The report has on it the submitters name and address, email address and perhaps even a phone number. Usually people one contacts for further information respond. One gets the information by email usually in less than 5 minutes. One nice thing about using GenServ is that you can update your database every 6 months. That means that mistakes are not perpetuated on cdrom for perpetuity. I do believe that corrections can be made to the LDS ancestral file also, but probably not so easily. Although I primarily do my research from books in the library, census documents and vital records, I have found that some of these large databases provide some helpful clues now and then. Just make sure that what you find, you verify and when you submit information, that you send the sources also to help others in verifying your information. Also make sure NOT to include material of a personal nature for living individuals such as social security numbers. Margaret Scheffler

    2. My Danish gr-grandfather belonged to these two societies while residing in the Chicago area between 1910 and 1923. I found this info on his obituary and haven't been able to find anything about either one. Anyone out there having information please contact me. Thanks to everyone who's helped with my search so far (especially Tim). I wouldn't be nearly as far without your help! Cynthia [email protected]

    1. Emigrant Savings Bank Project Update
    2. A few weeks ago we announced the new search engine for the Emigrant Savings Bank project located at http://www.genexchange.com/esb/. Entering search text in the Surname field would pull records from our database where either a surname, a relatives surname, or a word in the notes field matched the text. Due to request we have further tuned the search engine for the Emigrant Savings Bank project so that an alphabetical list of records can be generated by entering a single letter in the Surname field. By entering a single letter in the Surname search field all records where the surname begins with that letter will be displayed. Entering any more than a single letter will generate a query based on the rule I quoted above. This change gives the researcher the best of both worlds, and should make it much easier to locate that long lost emigrant you may be looking for. Any question or comments should be sent directly to Monica Bennett (Emigrant Savings Bank Project Coordinator) at [email protected] Warmest Regards, ----- Anthony Abby Genealogy Exchange & Surname Registry - http://www.genexchange.com GenExchange FAQ page - http://www.genexchange.com/faq.cfm About the GenExchange - http://www.genexchange.com/volunteers.cfm How can I help? - http://www.genexchange.com/volunteering.cfm

    1. Re: Copying part of digest?
    2. Judy Bivens
    3. To Copy part of a digest. click on start click on programs, click on accessorite click on wordpad. minimize your wordpad come back to the digest that has your message in it. Highlight only the part you want to copy click on edit click on copy go back to wordpad click on file click on paste. this puts it in a document that you can save as a filem print, add to or what ever you want to do. Hope this helps Judy

    3. Now, that I've gotten the little one off to school, I'll try to do a little research and find out who owns the site. I guess those spammers are getting much better. This looks like an aliased site. Meaning, you type in the genealogy site and it forwards you to the porno site. I've forwarded it on to the guys at Rootsweb so hopefully, this won't happen again. 1. Re:Check Freebies Site
    2. Your'e are right this site is filthy. Everyone save yourself some trouble and don't go to it. It is a shame someone would have the nerve to post this kind of trash to a genealogy site. I hope the culprit is found and barred from the list.

    1. Question for NH Birth Record
    2. Linda Gilbert
    3. Boy, do I feel stuped. I just notice in somewhat bold letters on the front that it says "SEE OTHER SIDE." Mother's information is listed. I just received my husband's birth certificate. He was born in Portsmough, New Hampshire. His Father is listed but not his Mother. In fact, there is no place for a mother's information. I am use to dealing with mostly Texas documents. Is this "normal" for New Hampshire. The date of birth was 1943. Thanks for your response.

    1. Copying part of digest?
    2. Corinne1 Hackett
    3. Hi - Would it be possible for one of the computer-savy listers to e-mail me privately with the instructions for copying just a part of the digests? I would really appreciate the help. If there is something I want, I have to copy the entire thing and I am wasting a ton of paper ! Please make it simple - as I am not real computer-literate.
