OK, this soundex machine sounds great and I took a look, but is it all American records? I'm looking for Australia and Greece. The Minnesota Historical Society has those records. You can contact them at www.mnhs.org Happy Hunting Toni
I was told by someone they thought Washington National Cemetery is in Suitland, Maryland. Can someone confirm this for me. Thank you very much. Jan mailto:[email protected]
To see all of message in word pad without having to scroll right, go to View, Options, and select Wrap to window. You may have to select word wrap on you email also, if you have the option available. Most do it automatically. I hope this helps someone. Sue > I have exactly the same problem printing from word pad information that has > been forwarded to me. Dear Jennifer, According to my book, " A to Zax A comprehensive Dictionary for Genealogists & Historians" A Hicksite Quaker : a conservative branch of the Society of Friends ( Quaker) church. They did not believe that women should participate in the church service, nor should any member join a reform movement. The several yearly meetings of this branch were brought together biennially in a group known as the Friend's General Conference. Hope this helps, ]Sincerely, Diane Eaton Hacker [email protected]

Is there anyone that has a family tree of Jones from Norway. Is Jones a name that might have been given over here after they came. Or is there Jones' from there. Cindy
Today I received what a person referred to as a standard "Word" attachment. I thought I knew what that was because it looks like a small steno pad. However, unlike the others, it never went onto my icon page (my first page). These papers consisted of materials on genealogy...most of all of my relatives. However, I am finding that I am seeing things which I do not understand. For instance, there are a number of squares..also the letters XE as well as E are used much throughout the document. Lastly, the term "Hicksite Quaker" was used to refer to some of my relatives. Would anyone know what this means? I Any help would be appreciated. Jennifer [email protected]
I also use Netscape and tried that today- didn't work for me- may have the original form of the message- from a gen program. Anyway, reducing the font size twice worked on this particular one. This may not work for all programs, but in my Netscape, I just click on "View" and then click on "Wrap Long Lines" and messages that seem to go on forever automatically fit my screen.
Jayme, I can help some. I speak a little German-not enough to translate the whole thing, but enough to get some more clues. I tried the Babelfish site, and it's awfully literal, translating words rather than phrases. It also can't guess at words that are misspelled due to worn stones. I'm pretty sure the crossbars are worn off of several t's, making them look like l's. You're right, geb. Is an abbreviation for geboren = BORN Gallin I think should be Gattin = WIFE. Von = from or of, so Gattin von = WIFE OF I think you're right about the names. It's not so much that Matter and Jonghans translate to Martin and Junkins, but that's the way names changed with emigration. The first phrase I can't get much out of. Aus des = from the Arme can be poor man/poor woman, or it can be ARMS. "In die Arme nehmen" means hug or embrace-maybe that's the idea. Und = AND Dem = a form of THE Kreis = CIRCLE or CYCLE (life & death, maybe?) Der = THE Kmdor-my best guess is Kinder, with the I and n squished together and the middle of the e worn away. Kinder = CHILDREN, but I can't make sense of that in context. Russ = SOOT (maybe something like "ashes to ashes?) Todes is a form of Tod = DEATH or maybe "the dead" Strenges = SEVERE, AUSTERE, STRICT, HARSH Grunder-Grund = GROUND, BASIS, FOUNDATION. I think Grunder is the plural form. Ach = OH Wir = WE Sund-could it be sind? Sind = ARE, as in "we are." Nichls I think is nichts = NOT Uns = US The second phrase I can do a bit better on. Ich = I Liege = LIE Und = AND Schlufe I think is schlafe = SLEEP, so "Ich liege und schlafe" = "I lie and sleep" Gan ??? Maybe a wrong letter in there. Or ganz = COMPLETELY, so maybe the z is worn off Mil I think is mit = WITH Frieden = Peace, so "mit frieden" = "with peace," "in peace" or "at peace" Denn = BECAUSE Allein = ALONE Du Herr = You, Lord (GOD) (Herr can also be gentleman, as Babelfish translates it) Hilfst = HELP Mir = ME, so "Denn allein Du Herr hilfst mir" = "Because You alone, Lord, help me" Dosz ???? Ich = I Sicher = SAFE, SECURE Wohne = LIVE (I live) German has different rules for capitalization than English. In German, all nouns are capitalized. If you copied the inscriptions with the capitals, please repost that way. Being able to tell the nouns from the verbs may give me or somebody else another clue. Also, knowing that many of the t's are worn and look like l's, is it possible you could go back and look again with that in mind? German is a highly dialectic language, so that may be part of the puzzle. Do you know what part of Germany these people came from? That may give us another clue. Or, if you don't know, it's possible some bit of dialect on the gravestones may give you a clue what region they came from! I currently live in Germany, and have friends who can probably translate what I can't, if we can figure out what the right letters and words are. To me, this is a challenging puzzle, and I love a good puzzle! Please don't hesitate to contact me. Good luck! Allison Baugh
Does anyone know how to find a German settlement in the 1800's in Texas by the name of Windthorst? I think it was either in Clay or Cooke County. Nita
I have MS Works- no MS Word- I went to "View" changed [decreased] font size, until all sentences were visible in preview. This worked on one document that I had received; haven't tried it on others. If it doesn't work on others, I will change printer setting to landscape and try that. I have exactly the same problem printing from word pad information that has been forwarded to me. The sentences continue forever with no paragraphs. Linda, What City and State is this in? I too have had people tell me such stories. I would suggest that you go to the local Genealogy Society ask them for help, tell them your plight, and see if they have any record of the buried in their Archives or Library. I would go back to the Cemetery and show the evidence you have (if you already haven't done so) ask them if any grave sites have been removed. Is this a small cemetery or a large one? I have a friend that had the same trouble, back east, the Cemetery was not huge, and the staff was not willing to help her out. Most places are willing to help. Hope you find her family and God bless her Heart. Stacy
I just wanted to say "Thank You" to everyone for helping me track down the addresses for Ancestry.com and let you know that Library.com at www.library.com/tlc/contact/telesale.htm is actually a library software online catalog. But thanks to many of you and a very nice lady by the name of Sharon at the above address, I was able to get this Phone number for the customer support at genealogy-library.com (1-800-474-8696). I wanted to share this with you and let you know how much I appreciated your help. I truly enjoy the willingness to help each other practiced on this list. Thanks again...Denise Murchison
