THE GLOBAL GAZETTE - Canada's Family History Magazine Vol. IV, No. 11, June 23, 2000 A new issue of The Global Gazette is online and filled with new articles To check it out, click on: http://GlobalGazette.net/gazettes/gaz57.htm . The Global Gazette is produced by volunteers, and provided to the heritage community without charge. The publication is sponsored in full by GlobalGenealogy.com AOL Users hotlink: <a href="http://GlobalGazette.net/gazettes/gaz57.htm"> http://GlobalGazette.net/gazettes/gaz57.htm </a>. SUMMARY OF ARTICLES IN THE JUNE 23, 2000 ISSUE: EDITOR'S CORNER Rootsweb acquired by MyFamily.com... What does it mean? Who owns my contributions to Rootsweb? Will Rootsweb remain free? Will my research be sold? Also in this issue an appeal for volunteers for an exciting new Society Of Genealogists/London Metropolitan Archives project. The new Exhibition and Genealogy Centre in Taobh Tuath (Northton, Outer Hebrides, Scotland) is opening in a year which has seen genealogy being acknowledged as one of the top attractions for people visiting Scotland. http://GlobalGazette.net/gazettes/gaz57.htm EAST COAST KIN (Canada) I set off for Providence, Rhode Island at the end of May with a full set of inherited baggage -- not my virtual suitcases, per se -- but rather cerebral baggage. I was weighed down with preconceptions of what to expect from the (US) National Genealogical Society Conference. This week I share with you What I learned in Providence. http://GlobalGazette.net/gazettes/gaz57.htm LOYALISTS IN CANADA In this issue we begin looking at the Loyalist Petitions for Land Grants made by the displaced, the refugees, and the disbanded Loyalist fighting men for land grants in British North America. This act of petitioning, by Loyalists, their widows, and their children, was a response to the British government, which in turn was responding to a desperate situation. With thousands of newcomers crowding the still-British northern colonies in America, immediate reaction was necessary to settle them. http://GlobalGazette.net/gazettes/gaz57.htm IRISH ORIGINS We have received many email messages from readers, wondering when the next Irish Origins column will appear. Kyle Betit is on an extended European business trip during May and June but will return with more columns for Gazette readers beginning in July. In the meantime, check out Kyle's archived columns, some of which you may have missed in the past or use our complete list of Irish articles from the Gazette back issues: http://globalgazette.net/backaut.htm#betit http://globalgazette.net/backtop.htm#irish NOS RACINES FRANCAISE (Our French Roots) One of the reasons it is difficult for those who are not familiar with Quebec to find relevant records is that the laws of this province are different from those of other provinces and other English based systems. This is not surprising before the English conquest or even before the Confederation of Canada. However, to this day Quebec has had separate and unique laws affecting the handling of vital and other records. Xenia Stanford sheds light on how to navigate through Laws, Customs and Practices to find Vital Records in the Province of Quebec http://GlobalGazette.net/gazettes/gaz57.htm ROVING REPORTERS There are hundreds of thousands of Acadian descendants in Canada and the United States. If your family tree has one or more branches in Acadia, a key source of information will be the church records. Most of the church records of Acadia have already been transcribed and printed. This makes searching the surviving 200+ year old Acadian records easier than searching for modern records. Read Jim Hebert's article Extant Acadian Church Records for valuable insights on these resources. http://GlobalGazette.net/gazettes/gaz57.htm UPCOMING EVENTS (WORLDWIDE) Browse or submit announcements for upcoming family history events, genealogy conferences, workshops and family reunions from around the world. Hello, Stephanie, I did a search on the internet and found the book listed in a Bibliography on a FFHS site http://www.ffhs.org.uk/new/soldier.htm. Your message caught my eye because I'm a Kitzmiller descendant and John M. Kitzmiller, II, along with his father, wrote a lengthy, well sourced genealogy of the Kitzmiller family entitled, _From The Danube To The Susquehanna: 350 Years Of The Kitzmiller Family, Vol. I & Vol. II_. A search of genealogy book shops might locate it for you. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll see if I can find Mr. Kitzmiller's address. I bought my books from him about 3 years ago. Does anyone have this book, or know if their library does and can do a lookup for me? "In Search of Forlorn Hope" is a 2 volume book by Kitzmuller. I was told that I could find out where a Regiment was in this book. I am looking for information on William Lewis's Company of regulars, 1st Reg US Levies (ie US Troops), also under Lt. Col. Hello GenTippers, Does anyone know where there is a Palmer Index on CD in the United States? They have them in large libraries in England. You can put a name in and if there was an obituary printed in the London Times between 1790 and 1901, it will give the date and you can send for a copy. The FHC in Utah has the printed volumes, but they are not indexed. The FHC said that some of the Universities libraries may have it. If you know of one, please advise me. I am looking for my great-great grandfather. He was quite wealthy and I believe he would have had an obituary. I know he was still alive in 1839 when his son was married. However, I do not know where or when he was born, and where or when he died or is buried. Having an obituary might help answer some of those questions. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JSuman@aol.com
