    1. The Sea of John Johnsons
    2. Gwyneth Horobin
    3. Help! I would like to find out where in Norway my great-great grandfather, John Johnson came from. Family notes say he came from Oslo, but that may turn out to be the port that he sailed from. I know that his wife was Anna Yanda. Their first child, Edward was born in Norway, and the second child Anna born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, so they must have come to America around 1878-9. I know that I should search the ship lists and naturalization records, however, how will I ever know which one is him, being that his name was John Johnson? Thank you, Gwyneth Horobin http://www.geocities.com/gwynethart ===== http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Trail/2456 http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Musee/9323 If a little dreaming is dangerous, the cure for it is not to dream less but to dream more, to dream all the time. -Marcel Proust (1871-1922) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 2. Ralph, thanks so much for your info on finding the name of the town and naturallization process. I too have been searching for my great grandmother from Ireland and have hit a brick wall. When you answer one persons questions it often affects us others. Thanks again. Marilyn

    1. Re: [GT] Naturalization records
    2. Nancy and GenTippers, Your are correct in your speculation that "N1884" probably means that is the year he was naturalized. At that time a wife would most likely gain citizenship when her husband naturalized. I would not expect to find an application for her. The value of finding his application may be a "correct date" of arrival and possibly the name of the ship. This could direct you to a passenger list that contain the names of specific towns. You can find a piece that I have written on naturalization at my web site. <http://members.aol.com/RalphK/DocumentSearch.html> The 1900 and 1910 census also asked questions concerning birthplaces of mother and father. Don't be too hopeful as most census takes simply indicated the name of the countries, but I have seen a few the included the town. Good luck in your research, one step at a time, backwards. Area and Annapolis, MD. Problem searches a specialty. Research at: DAR Library, National Archives, Library of Congress, MD, State Archives In a message dated 7/13/00 9:41:20 AM, NGroves@aol.com writes: << My great-grandfather and great-grandmother emigrated from Sweden and Denmark, respectively. There is no family information on which part of those countries they came from, but I'd dearly love to know. I have obtained death certificates and obituaries for both relatives, but they don't provide anything other than the country of origin. A volunteer looked up census records from 1920, which again listed only the country. I 'm hoping that naturalization records will at last provide the details I need. The census records indicated that both relatives were naturalized; the record for my great-grandfather included the phrase "N1884," which I presume means he was naturalized that year. There was no year given for my great-grandmother. I can probably find the record for my great-grandfather given what I know, but what about his wife? Would she have had to file for naturalization, or would it have been bestowed automatically when she married (if her husband was already a citizen), or when he became naturalized? I don't want to waste time looking for a record if there isn't one. Can anyone clarify how this process worked for women? Nancy >>

    3. Have you checked the Rootsweb state archives? All Texas marriages, births and deaths are listed. You could get her marriage then see if she died under that name. If he died then you have to look for another marriage for her. Also check SSDI. 1. [GT] Search suggestion for Civil War pension list
    2. One word of caution when using the search feature. I'm not sure exactly how it is searching... but I only found my gggrandfather by using his last name. When I plugged in first name, last name - didn't work and when I used last name, first name - also didn't work. I had to use just his last name. Even after I knew what state it was filed under, that his middle initial was used, and that his widow's first name was on the index -still could not call it up except by using JUST his last name. So don't give up if at first you don't find the name you're looking for - try just his surname. Patti

    1. [GT] Genealogy Researching of the Future has just arrived Today.
    2. Chris & Tom Tinney, Sr.
    3. Genealogy Researching on the Internet has just taken a giant step forward, by the introduction of "geographic search technology to Northern Light." At present, "Geo Search" can be used "to find real- world locations, services, businesses, and activities anywhere in the US or Canada." Researchers "can specify a place in the U.S. or Canada" . . . "and a radius from that place -- from 1 to 100 miles", at: http://northernlight.com/geosearch.html Key to finding information is the concept of: "LIMIT SUBJECTS", "LIMIT DOCUMENTS", "SELECT DATE RANGE" and "SORT RESULTS BY" "Relevance", or "Date & Time". Application of this kind of resource to a "Federated Independent Genealogical and Family History Web Societies" organization, would "offer automatic internal Search services and automatic online submissions of data to all major search engines, ASAP and worldwide." The role of online research now requires a "reduction in current bureaucracy [Internet disorganization to a centralized unit], which can be promoted, to keep online genealogy free and independent; a part of the socialization and learning process of society as a whole. This independence requires responsible cooperation. Local organization societies, libraries and researchers with web sites, can voluntarily submit to national and international standards: for credentials that can be applied at the local level, within the state civil licensing communities. Scholarly standards must also merit research acceptability, as currently promoted by the community of institutions of higher learning, within each designated region." The critical difference between this and current local society's or library's sites, (which have links to relevant genealogical content, including mailing lists, organizations, and databases), is: the potential ability to format genealogy and family history Internet searching by three KEY items: LOCATION, TIME, [and with proper adjustment], SURNAMES or [Pedigree] RELATIONSHIPS.
