    1. Re: Scanned photos
    2. Hello, Anything flat can be scanned with good quality if the scanner is good, obviously nothing good is gonna come out of a handheld scanner just the same way that a crappy camera doesn't take good photos. You need a flatbed scanner with a resolution of at least 1024x768 pixels (if it's 1280x1024 even better) with 16.7 million colours I know some people talks in DPIs instead of pixels, I think the good ones start at 4800 DPI. There's some photo companies that will print anything from a image file, for example BOOTS (on the UK) will print your negatives or images onto paper, cardboard, puzzles, mugs, caps, t-shirts, etc. So just specify that you want it in photographic paper with the best possible quality. Any shop licensed on KODAK PhotoCD processing will do excellent scannings of negatives and write them on a PhotoCD, one of this CD's can hold up to 100 phots, and can print phots from the PhotoCD at anytime afterwards. Once a photo is on a image file, then you can correct the focus, enhance edges, remove red eyes, remove unwanted people, do a "pixel washing", correct the color histogram, gamma correction, etc, sometimes you can even make people that was on the shadows visible. Good photo manipulating software are: Kai's Photo Soap, PhotoShop, PhotoSuite, and so many others, the best approach it's to use a cocktail of them, because some packages have some features that other don't, like focus correction & eye reduction. Carlos Ijalba. Researching on surnames: IJALBA, MIRAMONTES, SANTIBAEZ & ROSENDE. carlos.ijalba@telewest.co.uk //\/\\ ||)> ||\\ 2's _____________________ Reply Separator ___________________________ Subject: Scanned photos Date: 02/10/97 16:20 If I understand the e-mail I've been receiving which I do appreciate, scanned photos can be reproduced and perhaps even be made into a photograph. 3. Hi everyone Are you ready for the holiday season? Maybe you'd like to check out the Baker's Dozen Genealogist Wish List at http://www.olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/ "All I want for Christmas..." Either leave it lying out for your loved ones to see (for gifts for yourself!) or use it to figure out what to get another avid genealogist in the family Also if you've inherited old family photos but have no idea what time period they are from, you might want to watch "5 Types of Early 19th Century Photographs - a YouTube Video< http://www.olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2011/11/5-types-of-early-19th-century.html >" on the Olive Tree Genealogy YouTube Channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/OliveTreeGenealogy?feature=mhee Learn about the 5 main types of photos from the 1800s and the time periods in which they were produced. The video has many examples of these types. The November Genealogy Challenge was well met and several people submitted their cemetery photos which are being made into videos for the Cemetery Walks on YouTube. See http://www.olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/p/cemetery-walks_26.html for a complete list of what's online and what is waiting in the wings! One last thing - Olive Tree Genealogy just published Case #10 for Found Dog ID Tags of Soldiers. One of the missions of Olive Tree Genealogy is to reunite found Dog ID Tags of soldiers with their descendants. Readers of my blog pitch in to help find loved ones. The list of our cases and whether the dog tags have gone home to descendants or we are still working on finding family is at http://www.olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/p/soldiers-dog-tags-cases.html I'll give my Canadian listers a spoiler - next week there is a case coming up (Case #11) which involves a Canadian soldier from WW1. His dog tags have been found and the finder desperately wants to see them go back to family. Please take a peek and see if you can help with any of the open cases! What a great Christmas present that would be for some family - to have their dad or grandpa's dog tags returned. Just thought you might want to know and that you can check your computer to see if you do have a virus. Terry Thacker Doing genealogy is like writing OUR own family Bible. 1. [GENTIPS] Local Museums - an Overlooked Genealogy Treasure Trove
    2. Olive Tree Genealogy
    3. Readers of Olive Tree Genealogy blog at http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com know that a few weeks ago I purchased an antique cook stove made in Guelph Ontario Canada. Both my parents were born in Guelph and my father's ancestry there goes back to the 1830s. Not finding much information online about the Guelph Stove Company<http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2011/05/guelph-stove-company-and-genealogy.html>, I wrote to the Guelph Civic Musuem<http://guelpharts.ca/guelphmuseums/section.php?sid=247>. The Assistant Curator, Kathleen Wall, responded very quickly to my query and provided details on the history of the company. I'm always looking for information on places my ancestors worked, so I decided to ask Kathleen if the Museum had any information or photographs for a few of the places I knew family members worked. My great-grandfather Peer is listed in several Guelph City Directories pre 1900 as working at Robert Stewart which I was pretty sure became Stewart Planing Mills. My grandfather McGinnis worked at Page-Hersey<http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2010/09/completing-ancestor-picture.html>in 1917 and perhaps other years. My maternal grandfather worked at the Guelph Lumber Co. before 1941. And my father worked at Biltmore Hats<http://olivetreegenealogy.blogspot.com/2010/09/biltmore-hats-and-dad.html>in Guelph before WW2.
