I attended a Genealogy Fair in San Francisco several years ago and purchased several disks from this woman. She had many graphics displayed (including several variations of trees, frames, title pages, etc.) that she guaranteed would work with my word processor (Microsoft Word for Windows) - they really looked GREAT. Needless to say - NOTHING worked! When I wrote her she assured me she would correct the problem and get back to me. Several phone calls and another letter from me, over a period of months, resulted in her asking me to return the disks so she could fix the problem. I did as requested - returned the disks and accompanying documentation. To keep this fairly short - I have not heard from her since I returned all the material I had purchased - close to $100 worth - in 1997. I wrote another letter requesting a refund for the materials - nada, nothing, niet, zero, zip - not even the courtesy of a reply to my letter. 2. You know I have to agree with the person who said if you get an unhappy response to a request talk to that person and let them know how you feel. Everyone can come up with reasons for someone's rudeness and scorn them also. We just can't help eventually replying to what is being said after you have read if for the fifteenth time. Here I am, myself. I just have read all the email about "Rude Volunteers." Let's please let it go. Sorry for my reply. Just let's quit. "THE END"

    3. I requested a CD lookup for marriages in MO between 1851 and 1900. Here is information I was provided from that index (CD234). Now what? I understand what this information is telling me down to the microfilm no. I am assuming this is a film I can view, but where? Or is it a record I can request either online or through snail mail? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Belinda Bell, J. M. Spouse : Carson, Sarah J. 2. I purchased the ULTIMATE FAMILY TREE DELUXE (palladium), installed it, and no matter what I do I cannot get on line through the "on-line resources" . I have signed on to AOL, minimized it and then opened the UFT and tried it that way and still nothing, Palladium told me it was a problem with AOL. and AOL said I also had trouble with my browser, after installing UFT. After using my CP & letting it go to "sleep", I cannot get on the internet, unless I shut down AOL & then restarting. After that everything is fine. Next time, same thing all over again. I get the same message.

    3. Education did not really catch on until the 20th century ,my grandfather had a third grade education. My grandmother went to the 6th grade, neither one was an avid reader and wrote few letters. Having this information, I thought of an experience that I've had in my research. If you will check the IGI at your local Family History Center, you will find all the "Vance's" that FHC has on microfilm. Follow the various spellings, write down every possible spelling and run them down in the IGI. For example, one of my surnames is KUSCHEL, the IGI has KUSCHELL,KISSEL,COSSEL,COSSELL, KOZZELL, KOZEL,KUSEL. Another of my surnames is FELTER, the IGI had FLEDER, FETTER, FIELDER,FELDER, FELDRE, FEDLER. Many people could not spell or write, so the spelling of the name was done by sounding it out. If you have hit the proverbial brick wall, check out all of the spellings, make up spellings of the surname, you just might hit pay dirt. 3. hi Betsey and Listees .. Yes , Yes and Yes .... By all means , use the School records !! , My story ; while researching my grandfather in the Dillion Courthouse a few years ago , 1997 ( Dillon Montana ) the court clerk suggested checking wih the School District office , which was the next room over , So I did , asked if they had any thing that would help us with the family .... The Lady reached over in to the File drawer behind the office door and pulled out the Original ' School Census ' for 1903-4-5-6-7 etc , which listed every child going to school in the Beaverhead Co Schools during those years , which included my Father and all his siblings , And on the bottom of most of the pages was the Signature of my Grandfather and Grandmother !!!! , They both were the School District officials ... , So Go Get em , Phil.. ps , I am posting this to GEN-NEWBIES Too , Phil.. 1. Re: RUDE VOLUNTEERS/requests
    2. Frances
    3. I am more that willing to help any one, but it is important to make your requests as specific as possible. Such as a surname in death records or deed books, keep it to one name per request. Let the researcher know that you received the information. My biggest beef are persons who say send me all your information. Do they really know what an undertaking that would be? Or the person who never acknowledges that they received the information or if it was helpful. There are times that I will send a little more because it appears to relate to the query, in our research we all find tidbits that relate to our specific search, we save those as well. Just a little thank you would be greatly appreciated. Frances Rouse frfg@worldnet.att.net When a Loved One Becomes a Memory The Memory Becomes a Treasure

    3. Hi Guys I have been on this mailing list for a while, and I, for one, have no problems with any of the stuff being chatted about, but I digress. I have offered to do look ups on ships and a great many people sent me requests, which is what I offered. But for a lot of the requests I have not had a chance to either do the look up or respond to the original request. This, hopefully, doesn't mean that I am being rude, it simply means that, like everyone else these days, life is so hectic that I simply haven't had the chance. So my advice, Belinda, is be patient, you never know if someone has filed your request for later action. Family tree research is obsessional but it should be a joy, it shouldn't be bringing you to tears. Relax and trust in the universe that the right information will reach you at the right time. All the best from Down Under Cheers Elly -----Original Message----- From: PeculiarWeb Internet Designs <peculiar@peculiarweb.com> To: GenSwap-L@rootsweb.com <GenSwap-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, 2 October 1998 2:53 Subject: Re: RUDE VOLUNTEERS/requests >I apologize to all, first :) I think I've been replying >personally to the people on the list, instead of sending >a reply-all. 1. GRANDSON? OR "NEPHEW"?
    2. Saffold
    3. Sharing something I recently learned from another list: "Just a word about the word nephew. Nephew is an Old English word that means grandchild. If one reads old colonial wills and reads that something is left to "my nephews," it really means grandchildren."
