Louise and all, When you're contacting county offices to obtain information about a marriage remember to ask for a copy of the marriage APPLICATION not the license. The application is where you will find the genealogical information (providing the couple getting married knew the correct facts) but you need to specify this when you write or you'll just get a copy of the license. Also, if you know where any of the relatives were living at the time of their death and it happened after the early 1900's when death certificates began to be required (the date varies by states) you can sometimes get valuable information from those. Again, the information is only as good as the person who provided it knew but it can perhaps give clues. Good luck....Pat

Louise >> Louise, Find out when and where your living relative was born and married. Write to the appropriate office to get a copy of the birth and marriage certificates. These will get you started on the family and you can work your way back from there. Depending on the state, county and time period, you may be able to get the information at your local FHC on microfilm. There are lots of resources out there, but for the more recent years it is usually easier to get the documents from the agencies responsible, such as an office of vital statistics, city or county governments, etc. Good luck! June - usually if you want an uncertified copy, you have to call and ask specifically for one. Many agencies send out certified copies as a matter of course. Here is everything you ever needed to know about GA Vital Records: http://vitalrec.com/ga.html Good luck! Myra

So many people have asked me about the Ohio County History surname index that I thought I would send my answer to the group. Sorry if you are hearing more about this than you want to hear. For those of you in Indiana, the Indiana State Library has an index to county histories on microfiche. But as to Ohio, the index is on a set of 64 microfilms. My understanding is that it covers at least one county history for each county. I suggest a SASE to the Ohio Historical Society at 1982 Velma Av, Columbus, OH 43211. Request: 1) information on interlibrary loan and forms. 2) Information on the rolls numbers for the Ohio County History Surname Index 3) list of books indexed. June
I can understand all of you. I do not work, but i work many hours of the day in my home. So i do work!! Some times i forget to look where i e-mail. I am a disabled person. 5 Strokes and i do not have a good memory any more. But if i see an e-mail i do not like i just hit delete. So i make many mistakes!! Thank you an Happy Holidays. Viola.
In answer to your question as to how to get more information about a person you believe died during the civil war, I think I can help. There is a set of books called Roll of Honor, Names of Soldiers who Died iin Defense of the American Union. Your local library may have this and if not you can get the film from the FHD nearest you. Check the pamphlet called US MIlitary Records p 23. The film numbers of the Roll of Honor are there. It is FHC Film numbers 1311589-91. It will be better to look at the books if you can. You have to look in the index of each book for the name. The books are arranged by burial site within the specific state or area. Each entry generally gives the soldier's name, rank, regiment, company and death date and place of burial. Happy Hunting, June
I checked a few sources that I have and found nothing but I do have one suggestion you may not have tried. It is a relatively new resource, out in the last few years. There is a set microfilms of indexes to county histories all over the state of OH. You can order the microfilm for any given surname from the Ohio Historical Society throught interlibrary loan. You might find some reference in another county where you would not have expected to find it. Ohio Historical Society is at <A HREF="http://www.ohiohistory.org/textonly/"> Ohio Historical Society Online</A> Junebyr@aol.com
I have the "Roll of Honor:Civil War Union Soldiers " if anyone would like a look up, let me know. Just one name a time please. Not exactly a swap, but oh well :) I'm the world's worst packrat, and have unwittingly compiled many recent obits from the Kern, Tulare counties. You can get a lookup here : http://members.aol.com/DHSDrama/kernobits.htm Analee Watts, IBSSG
Just found this site on Cemetery Interment. Cemeteries from all states. Some have lists of people buried there with dates and sometimes spouses. http://users.deltanet.com/~steven/cemetery.html
Would anyone have access to records in Stockport, Ohio, Morgan Co. also the records for the Church of Windsor OH. ? Looking for the parents or siblings of ELI JEFFERSON HAGERMAN b. 13 Dec. 1822 in Stockport, OH. (Stockport was then in Washington Co. but about1825 it split into Morgan Co.) Eli married Amy S. Morgareidge in 1843 and about 1856 they moved west to Iowa on a wagon train lead by Capt. John Noyes. I have all his history past his marriage and I have found a gaurdianship record that names James Legget or Legett his gaurdian in 1843, something to do with money given by or to Richard Morgareidge. Also to add to the mystery, in 1855, James Legget married a Hannah Hagerman, found out her folks were from PA. Suspect she might be related to Eli somehow. Lots of Hagerman's living in that area but none seems to claim old Eli. He's been a tough nut to crack. 2 generations in my family have tried to find him some parents but to no avail. Would appreciate any input or help, will swap info from IL. or pay for some serious searching. Cidney Engberg

No, they are not getting their wish because they failed to follow directions. Everyone is emailed a letter when they are subscribed and it tells them everything they need to know about the list from subscribing, to emailing to unsubscribing. Sending a message to a rootsweb list will not unsubscribe anyone, just make them look like, well I wont say it. Read your instructions or go to the rootsweb site to unsubscribe. I need to get a Death Certificate from GA. Does anyone out there know if one can get a copy from the co or if you have to write to the state? Also is there such a thing as an uncertified copy? In some states you can get uncertified copies very cheaply. If someone knows this, I would be very glad to get some guidance. Junebyr@aol.com
There are at least three sets of indexes that I have seen. There is the obituary index. Unfortunately this does not index the death notices. The New York Times has obituaries only for public figures. There are only a couple of volumes of this. Then there is the set of book indexes to articles. This is a more complete index but still isn't an everyname index. It is more attuned to articles about this and that than about everyday people. It would probably cover the murder article. It probably would not list everyone in the article. All of the above indexes go back to the 1850's which is when the newspaper started. (maybe 1855--I can't remember) In addition, I have seen (for a few years only) two volume with tiny print everyname indexes which definitely include the death notices. I don't know if these cover every year. Those are the ones I was wondering about. June
