One woman stated family history with explanation the GrUncle had left home at age 17 and none of the family knew what happened to him. Many folks stated they needed to search for records of earlier marriages, again, with a goal of locating missing relatives. To answer your specific question, I don't know whether genealogy/ family history of itself is acceptable to have SSA search its employment histories.
