That was a common migration path in the 18th century and very early 19th century, but by the 1840s Germans coming to Ohio were bypassing Virginia. Routes from PA included down the Ohio River or via the Great Lakes or overland. In fact, by that time some Germans were already starting to come up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers from New Orleans.
