Since Benjamin Franklin was apprenticed as a printer, he would have been very well read and could compose type with the best of them. For that matter he was literate in both English and French! As for Thomas Jefferson, he wrote several thousand letters and had a 3000 book library and was a master land surveyor, I cannot believe for a moment that he was illeterate. Howerever, I do agree with you that at one point in their lives (as we both were) illeterate from birth until age ten years or so.
