Hang out on the list(s) a week or so -- it looks like you already have. For the first day or two, read no post that has RE: in the Subject: line; after a bit of reading the new posts and the followups, it will make much more sense and the protocol will become fairly clear. Admit up front you're a newbie/newcomer/new poster, and even the grumpiest among us will try to be kind.
