A company in Utah has published indices for the 1870 census. I saw several of these for the midwestern states at the Wisconsin State Historical library. I am sorry the name of the publisher isn't in my notes. I found out the books are about $300 each, and didn't buy any! Try an on-line search for the specific census you want to examine.
