> I think I prefer availability to password unless it is my tree. > After all many of my facts were given to me by others. I have a bit of experience with this, and although my situation is somewhat different, my approach might be useful to others. My database requires a password to access. However, you can only get a password if you are already in the database - anyone not in the database has no possibility to browse it at all - but given the nature and definition of the database, it is not a problem. Once you get in, you are restricted in what you can look at - you can look at all the available records for anyone born before 1700, but for more recent data (and keep in mind that around one third of the database are living individuals), you are restricted to yourself and your relatives. Finally, there is no easily-copyable text. You can view trees, but they are represented as graphics like this: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k109/Adinos/tree.jpg (my own tree) You can also view individual records, bit it's the same story - they are not accessible as plain ASCII text either. Am I paranoid? perhaps, but at least I can be reasonably certain that nobody will be copying the database without my permission. [email protected]
