Here's another subject for the group to mull over. . . My g-grandfather came from Bremen, Germany, in 1867. I have copies of the ship log landing in New York. However, from there, he traveled to New Orleans and up the Mississippi to Illinois where he settled. My question is this, how do we research what happened in NY. Did they have to go through customs there? When were they considered to be in the U.S.A? Did they transfer to another, or possibly stay on the same ship? What was the name of that second ship? What was the trip to New Orleans like, where did it take them? The arrival in New Orleans. And, the transfer to a smaller craft for the trip up the Mississippi, along with the trip up the Mississippi as well. Surely there are stories "out there" of others making that trip.
