I don't know how "huge" his "huge" database is, but with GED2WWW you get an alpha selector and then the user can use Window's Ctrl-F to find something. Much less fuss. I have about 8,000 names in my "N" file and it takes this old 850MHz machine a blink to find a name. But, I don't really mean to get into database or linked lists theory! ;-)
