    1. "The Master Genealogist" needs GenBridge to migrate data
    2. Collene Pearce
    3. Several months ago, I purchased TMG 4.0. because I had read and had been told by many, that I could migrate my data from UFT, without losing any of it. When you have as much genealogy data as I do and as many of those little "notes" and "comments", you REALLY don't want to have to type ANY of it back in. ;-) I haven't had time to start using TMG and migrate my data, until now. Imagine my surprise when I started to do the conversion and discovered I would need ANOTHER commercial product to migrate the data. I was plenty ticked, but went to the www.whollygenes.com website, found GenBridge and the toolkit it is sold with and bought it. I (thankfully) chose the version on CD as well as the downloadable one. However, as I had time to work with the project, "right then", I wanted to download the files and install from them. As I was starting to download the file, my connection dropped and when I went back to the site, it had no idea I'd purchased anything (but my credit card does). :-( So, I contacted their support staff, who sent me another link to download the needed file. That lost a day of project time, for me. Today, I downloaded the files, as directedand tried the installation. It failed, with the following message: Extracting Data1.cab Extracting Data11.cab Extracting Data2.cab Extracting from FTSTINST.r00 Extracting from FTSTINST.r01 CRC failed in DATA2.cab I've downloaded all the files 2 or 3 times now and can only assume the files are corrupted at the website. Has anyone else experienced this?? How did you resolve the problem? I'm a computer professional, so please don't assume I don't know how to install software. ;-) ---------------- I'm REALLY, REALLY irritated about this. I bought TMG, because I'd been told that my UFT data would transfer, beautifully!! That was untrue. You have to buy the GenBridge tool in order to transfer the data, without losing anything. :-( This sounds like false advertising, to me. :-( They should have told me I'd have to buy a 2nd software, if I wanted to migrate my data, before I purchased the product! :-( acp

There seems to be some miscommunication going on here somehow. GenBridge is part of TMG 4.0, built right into the program (as File/Import From). Rollie

    3. Genbridge is integrated in TMG 4.0x and will import your UFT data directly. You didn't have to buy any additional software. 3. What you really bought was their Family Tree Super Tools which is basically a read-only version of the soon-to-be released TMG 5.0. You probably should have sent an email to their tech support people before purchasing and asked what you needed. They have one of the best tech supports I've seen with any software. TMG 4.0 already had GenBridge built in. All you have to do is install TMG, go to File and Import from and choose your program. If you had one of the few versions which installed missing the import.ini file, tech support would have told you to create a file called import.ini and insert the text below (putting it in your TMG directory). If you have one of the earlier versions of TMG 4.0 (current is 4.0d) that perhaps didn't support UFT, they have a free upgrade to the 4.0d version on their website. 3. I made the same purchase and ran into the same problem having downloaded the file giving trouble three times. I gave up and wrote to tech support. Their question was "What drive did you download to?", like that would matter. I responded, and was then told that my file must be corrupt -- DUH!! Their only offered solution was to bill me for a CD and shipping, no refund offer or apology. And of course, I've not seen the CD yet. Obviously high margin on the CD + S&H. 3. I made a comment yesterday about downloading this software. I ran into the same probelm refered to here and I thought the tech support was less than adequate but they did offer to send a CD. The CD came yesterday and works fine. It appears I did not get charged for the CD or for S&H since I initially ordered download. It installed and runs fine. I've used FTM for years and this interface is a quite a bit different so it will take a while to learn my way around but there seems to be plenty of help text. TMG can be daunting, especially if you're not comfortable with its DOS-style interface, and there are many tips & tricks which are not obvious. -- Paul Havemann (paul@havemann.com) Havemann Family History: http://www.havemann.com/

Genbridge is part of TMG. You should import the data using File/Import from within TMG. The only reason that Genbridge has a different name is that the software developers make it available for use (presumably for a fee) in other software programs. Paul Bolchover
