    1. Stoudenmyre or Stoudenmire?
    2. Stud
    3. I'm trying to do some geneolegy on my fathers side of the family. His name was William Hyrne Stoudenmyre. I'm told it was changed from Stoudenmire to the current spelling. I'm new at this so any help would be greatly appreciated. I just came back from South Carolina, that is the birth place of my father. His mother's maiden name was Vida Belle Mc Clam, and she had a sister Audry Mc Clam Taylor, and Pansey Mc Clam Edens all of whom are deceased. I found their burial site while down there but need much more information. I would like to find my fathers birth certificate but was told that they didnt start recording birth records in SC. until 1915, and as far as I know he was born in 1910. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank-You.

(The first is "RECORD ALL YOUR SOURCES!!!") At times it was style (in gaelic-speaking areas, M', Mc and Mac are interchangable), at times it was lack of "standardized" spelling. Sometimes it had to do with the person recording the event not knowing the language of the name he/she was recording, others it was that the person recording the event just plain couldn't spell. I think it was Shakespeare whose name is recorded three different ways in the same document? You get the idea... In particular, in your case "i" and "y"are interchangable in most cases. This is why Soundex was invented - to be able to look for alternate spellings of a name. (Hint: http://google.com/search?hl=en&q=soundex, and in particular the second return on that search, http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/coding.html) -- Joe Makowiec can be reached at: makowiec(at)nycap(dot)rr(dot)com

    3. There is a record of US Citizen Sterling A. STOUDEMIRE found at Ellis Island age 20, gives b'date, and place of residence, North Carolina. When I looked for the 2 sp you gave it found none and came up with several suggested sp., this was the first on the list and the only record there for this name.
