I've looked at some census and other records and think I can put you back a couple more generations. Joel Benjamin Rowland was a son of Sandford and Rachel Watson Rowland. They were from Floyd Co, KY. In 1870 they were living in Meeker Co, MN along with Rachel's parents Jonathan and Elizabeth Jarrell Watson. Jonathan Watson married Elizabeth Jarrell 26 May 1843 in Floyd Co, KY. Sandford Rowland was a son of Daniel R. and Emily Lemaster Rowland. He's shown in their family in the 1860 Floyd Co, KY census. Daniel was born ca 1800 in VA according to the census. He married Emily Lemaster on 5 Dec 1841. It must have been a second marriage since he has children shown in the household that are older. I'm sending census images to show some of these connections. It needs to be proven with other sources if you can find them.
