Although many of us may use the genealogy-specific web sites and their data, I have found lately (past 2 months or so) that my personal genealogy web site is receiving alot more hits referred from general search engines such as google and yahoo (among others). Is it a trend that people are opting for the general search engines - or are there simply alot more people interested in researching their ancestry, so the increased traffic I'm seeing (from the referring page field) coming from the search engines is simply an overall increase in the volume of people researching? Simply curious.

My Dutch ancestors settled in and near Holland, Michigan in the 1840's. There are a lot of descendants that still live in the area. I am not one of them. So, every few months I do a search of the archives at the Holland Sentinel newspaper website. (It goes back to July 1997 and doesn't charge anything to let you see the entire article. I have been able to find a number of obituaries as well as birth announcements and engagement announcements this way. The Dykstra Funeral Homes in the area also have a website and for some people include a life story. I enjoy finding and reading these. Don't make obit a resume [forwarded from alt.obituaries] Barbara Quirk The Capital Times (Madison, WI) December 4, 2007 It seems John Doe passed away. Not to speak ill of the dead, but John had been a miserly type of guy; his wife Jane had called him cheap. Although the Does had been married for a long time, it was not a happy marriage, and no love was lost when John died. Arrangements for burial were being made, and the funeral director inquired about the obituary. "Just write 'John Doe was born May 1, 1940, and died June 1, 1999.'" The funeral director explained that there was a 50-word minimum for the newspaper and the costs would be the same either way. Without hesitation, the new widow responded, "Add 'Cadillac for sale.'" The subject of obituaries came up recently. We agreed that many of the obituaries today read like a resume rather than tell who that person really was. One of the women in the group described the obituary of a relative, an apparently very accomplished and well-known man. "The paper ran a big story on him with headlines about an inch high, but his actual obituary was quite short." She went on to explain that this man who loved photography had traveled to many countries, had written books and was an authority on art and antiques. Still, his family was able to say all this in a few short words. "He traveled the world photographing his adventures," and "His passion for local history was fulfilled with the publication of two local history books." We agreed that listing every country traveled and every interest would have made for a several-column eulogy. Of course, not every family member can write that tightly, but it is good to have some standards to aim for. I spoke with Jim Olle about obituaries. Olle, a Madison resident, is rather an authority on the subject as he has collected about 1,200 of them in his pursuit of family history. I asked him what he likes to find in an obituary. "It is helpful for me to find all of the names, dates and places and the names of all of the children and grandchildren. In the pursuit of genealogy, it is helpful to read about their military history, their social history, what clubs they belonged to, such as the VFW or the Elks." Olle, who focuses on his family as German immigrants, follows the line for three or four generations. "It is fascinating to see how the first generations lived close to each other and how subsequent generations start to fan out across the country. I asked about the style of so many lengthy obituaries in Dane County, and Olle, a retired engineer, just laughed. "This is a university town," he explained. "These guys are so used to writing for grants and have a need to throw in all of their credentials." Scott Kundinger, a manager at Cress Funeral and Cremation Service, sees more families bringing in the obituary information. Sometimes more than one family is involved. Traditionally, the information was straightforward, but lately it is more personal. Cress offers guidelines for loved ones to fill in the blanks with all of the vital statistics and the major information such as colleges or schools, occupation, war service, church and club memberships. Cress' outline also includes survivors and details of the funeral service itself. Kundinger suggests that if the date and time of the services are listed in the obituary, that can present an opportunity for someone to break in, knowing the house is likely to be empty. It is wise to have someone stay at the home during those times. Staff from the funeral home will assist the family in composing the obituary and will edit it as necessary. Likewise, newspapers have their own style of presenting the information. Something to consider is where the obituary should appear. If someone lived and worked in one community and retired to another, the notice could appear in several papers. Kundinger said obituaries are not required, and costs are charged by the line. For each data entry, there is the "best" source record, then the next best and so on. If the system operated with a sequential presentation of formats listing the most primary record available for any given event; also, added thereto a computer system search to attach that given evidence to any indexed reproduced online original record sources, (as well as the ability to recheck these databases over time), the whole Temple Ordinance Work record system would consistently become fully acceptable, as well as train submitters in correct record keeping. Temple Ordinance Work would remain in effect, from oral tradition to original document, with the printout giving information from the most primary record. Automatically, the record system could become self correcting, whenever any name or identity was matched within the series of various references, by producing in the end, the name, dates and places noted from the most original "best" primary sources; attaching thereto the dates and the duplicates of Temple Ordinance Work done over time. This would stop, once and for all, excessive errors and weed out all entries submitted from fictitious data records, made up by individuals trying to corrupt the database, or by unintentional neglect or ignorance. I also agree that it takes human reasoning. Modify the process developed for Name Extraction Programs. . . . Faxes Sent to British Media logs During the 1998-2000 period my records indicate that I sent at least 6,137 faxes to the British media, of which 5,775 went via TPC's email-to-fax service and 362 were sent via fax-modem direct from my computer. The actual figure is obviously higher since, for most of this period, whenever a recipient asked to be deleted from my mailing list, I totally wiped all entries including that from the logfile. In the records "Y" indicates successful transmission from fax-modem, "N" indicates failed transmission from fax-modem. "E" indicates an error occurred while transmitting via fax-modem and a fax may have been only partly transmitted. "y" and "n" indicate success or failure via TPC. In April 2000 I changed the method of operation by recording "R" when a recipient requested removal, rather than wiping their details from my mailing list and records; and keeping "B" records for when TPC actioned a ban on a recipient's fax-number, but the recipient did not write to ask me to cease faxing. The purpose of these changes was to keep more accurate and complete records, but the intention was thwarted by the police complaint. Private Eye, 23 Oct 1992 Certainty level: 25% I'm not really sure whether this cover was intended to get at me, or whether it was re-interpreted after publication to be about me. This issue of Private Eye came out in October 1992, by which time I had been under severe continuous pressure at work and from the general population in Oxford for many months. It had John Major saying to his wife, "Come back, Norma!" under the title "Major's support lowest ever". There's a story behind this. In late October I was in the local pub (the Rose and Crown, nice traditional name eh) with two people from work, Simon and Phil. Phil had with him a copy of the current Private Eye. These are both "nice people" and on my side, I hasten to add. Simon pointed out the message on the magazine's cover to Phil, and asked "what do you think about that". Phil answered, "Well usually they [Private Eye] get it right". This exchange happened in front of me. Although I was ill at the time (this was before I'd started taking medicines) I hadn't read anything into the Eye cover until these guys pointed it out to me. Sometime later, again in the same road, a student shouted to one of his friends, "so when are you COMING BACK?", again in front of me. What I realised Phil thought it meant was a double-entendre, the "coming" referring to the act of ejaculation, the "back" referring to the human back-side. So in a play on words you get a person who is referred to as a back-side ejaculating. Charming. Of course, Phil could have been wrong. Perhaps there was no such meaning intended by Private Eye. Perhaps he saw meaning which wasn't there. Perhaps the moon is made from green cheese. Eclipse pub in Balham (20/Dec/2002) Certainty level: 70% On Friday 20/December/2002 I went to Balham to do some shopping and eating. When I went into the Eclipse pub for a meal there were two girls already at the bar being server, I ordered and sat down near the window. They sat down at the opposite window seat, out of sight. After a few minutes they started screaming repetitively "section, section". They were reading something and were trying to pretend that they were just repeating from what they were reading, but in reality it was quite obvious they were talking about me, specifically to confinement under mental health. As you can guess the behaviour of these unwise young things shows them to be from the underprivileged category which due to the natural laws of society is seldom seen in the better classes of restaurant - the McDonald's next door is their more usual habitat. My guess is that these two females were deliberately placed in the Eclipse with orders to be offensive to me personally. The alternative would be that no-one had ordered them and they were just being rude on their own account, but that is improbable, for two reasons; first, I was out of sight of them and one does not usually "pick on" a person one cannot see; secondly, there had that afternoon in Balham been other, less distinct incidents immediately preceding this, and it is inferable that MI5 were making quite a serious effort to create a physical incident, as they have done on numerous occasions previously. Ravenscourt Park 20/3/99 Certainty level: 70% On Saturday I went to Hammersmith, specifically Ravenscourt Park. There had recently been a resurgence of persecution activity, following the Capital spams. I went to the cafe in the park and had a cup of coffee outside, with my mother. As I went inside the cafe to return the cups, a woman shouted a sexual obscenity (not present on this audio file - don't ask), and she said loudly "something's wrong with him". You can just about hear it in the audio file; listen very carefully, several times; it is distinguishable. Much less subtle is the male voice shouting "take care he's a nutter" immediately after the woman's voice. As on the other recordings there's a lot of noise, but what the people say can be clearly heard. Evil old bat in BHS 18/12/98 Certainty level: 40% Not quite sure how sure I am about this one. I went down to Croydon (Surrey) with my mother to buy her a beret. After doing the shopping, we went to the BHS store restaurant to lunch on fish and chips. You can guess the rest. Auditory hallucinations my shrink calls them, faithfully recorded on Sony minidisc. Some old cow going on about "see that chap, the one over there, something's wrong with him". It is quite tiring being attacked by random idiots in the street, or as in this case, by some random, evil old bat in a restaurant. Fortunately it is only a sporadic occurrence. My enemies seem of late reluctant to waste resources in my direction. Should I take this as an insult? Am I not worth the millions of taxpayers money which has been wasted on me? Are the obsessives of MI5 themselves the "nutters" and "really mad" which they accuse me of being?
