That is inexpensive, providing you don't ruin your clothes<g>. Seriously, I think it depends on a lot of issues and what Ancestry has to offer. For me, they have little that would interest me as my research is in Quebec and Italy. Besides, I find it fun to look at these old records and see where my ancestor signed a birth certificate or possibly had to pay a fine for ripping someone off. In addition, the best data is that taken from actual records, not from someone else's database. There are some terrific researchers out there who quite accurate in their research, but for every good one, there might be a 1000 who take stuff found on the internet as gospel and then pass it off to someone who also thinks the data is accurate. It may be, but then again, it may not. Your call. Myself, I prefer quality over quantity. Of course, I only live 3 miles from one of the FHC locations and it only takes a few weeks to obtain a microfilm that I can view myself. My nickle's worth. Dick

I also use Cyndi's list a lot, Rootsweb, GenWeb, etc. As was mentioned, the site is mostly useful to those whose research is primarily in the USA since their foreign databases are nearly nonexistent. I pay the extra for the US Census images which have helped me tremendously. I was lucky enough to find one page where ancestors were not only listed but the census taker, whose affirmation was on the same page, was my g-g-grandfather. Whether it would be worth it for you, I don't know. Maybe you could try the trial version (which won't include the census images) to get a feel for it. Just be very sure to cancel before the trial period is up if you decide you don't think it's worth it. Gabrielle David in Ajo, Arizona

ancestry.com is advertised on nearly every page I see when searching for records. I decided to do a search on their site and it came up with literally hundreds of answers. ancestry.com has a fee, the one I would "want" is that $120+ subscription. Questions 1. Do you subscribe to ancestry.com and does it really have things that cannot be found online? I do not want to spend that much money only to find the information the same quality or worse quality than I've already found on my own. I wish they would allow a "sample" of a search so I would get an idea of what I would be buying from them So, anyone already subscribed to ancestry.com and are happy or very happy? ancestry.com claims to have marriage records for dates that I would have to go to the court house in person to get. If this is true then It might even be worth it. I'm just very worried that I might be wasting my money. Please give some guidance if you can. Thanks,
dnc in tennessee wrote: > Please give some guidance if you can. I have never actually subscribed to Ancestry.com, though I had access to their database for a year. This came about as a result of donating money to Rootsweb shortly before they were acquired by Ancestry. Donors were given free access to the database as a result. The time period may have been based on the amount that had been donated to Rootsweb, but I don't know that for a fact. One major benefit I had was that Ancestry never had my credit card number so they couldn't auto-renew my membership. I really dislike that policy. My magazine subscriptions don't do it, my genealogy society memberships don't do it, nowhere else in my life am I auto-renewed for anything. It is the primary reason I am not an Ancestry subscriber right now. If you decide to sign on the dotted line, read the cancellation policy very carefully. You may want to read some old threads on this topic too - they won't be hard to find because it comes up all the time. Is it worth the price? That depends on what you are looking for. I can tell you that in one year's time I never took a single name or date from any of their databases to add to my genealogy database. So did I get anything out of it? You bet! I collected tons of stuff from the PERSI database, then had a field day when I went to the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, IN. I found a couple of listings for my third great grandfather Edwin HYDE related to his Civil War activity. Because of this information I was able to find the 1890 NY Civil War Veterans Schedule and find him on it. I also was able to use the information to send to NARA for his pension file. From that I ended a 20 year quest (mostly my aunt's - not mine) to identify my third great grandmother's maiden name. NONE of this information came directly from the Ancestry database, but it ALL came about because of the clues I did find there. These are just two of many examples where I found clues through Ancestry that ultimately furthered my research. I want to emphasize the word CLUES here. There were no original records in Ancestry's database at the time (pre-digitized census). If you are comfortable adding information to your genealogy based on database transcriptions, you will be happy with Ancestry. If you want to use the database to find helpful clues you will be happy. If you expect to find original records so you don't have to make a trip to the courthouse you will be very disappointed. They aren't there. Would I sign up again someday? Maybe. I would include the census subscription if I did so. Ancestry may have to change some of their policies before I jump in again though. Two other comments come to mind... First, I am taking a very parochial (American) view in my comments here. I have heard many people from other countries say the databases within Ancestry aren't very helpful. I can't comment on that. Second, you say that you wish you could try out a few searches to see what you get before actually buying. Many libraries have subscriptions to AncestryPlus. I know many if not all public libraries in Michigan do (at least in the metro Detroit area). I know the library in Greenville, SC does. I don't know about places in Tennessee, which is where I assume you are from. If you are near Knoxville, Chatanooga, Nashville or Memphis you might want to check with libraries in those areas. Try it out then decide for yourself. Good luck. Mike Curtis
Dear Everybody! The US Consulate & Embassy in Miami has just posted a travel advisory warning to & for all US citizens not to travel to the following 3rd world country: Miami! Remember? Eisenhower declared it was to be shared with Cuba in 1959, but the bums kept it after 1 Jan 1959! The rest was cut to smithereens & parcelled out to Nicaragua, Guatemala, Panama, Honduras, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, definitely ad infinitem, on or about the year 1990. Wuh happen to de pepo from Eucador, Costa Rica, Belize, El Salvador, Mexico, Guyana? I donno! I gotta nuf twuable avoiding being stepped on (litterally & figuratively) by de utters both in the street & at the jobsite! Please remember that the only mafia in town is still the Italian or Asian one. (I cite or incite the FBI home page for North Miami, donno witch) The decision the US consulate in Miami was based upon my allegations of terrorism against American Tourists. Please promulgate (spread?) the above info asap! Please be advised that, due to the high awareness level here based upon the concept of politcal correctness (read:politcal corruptness), I can't divulge the name of the government! Thanks for the phone calls dough, although people should stop asking for the name of the hotel! I can't give it out because I've reported what's been going on to the US attorney. (yes, they are still permitted to maintain offices here!) Well actually, I reported it by phone & fax to US territory north of here in FT Lauderdale. In fact the US attorney was just on TV. We are still permitted to recieve US TV signals, at least as of today! If phone lines are cut to the US, I will most definitely be up the creek without a paddle to beam-up! Please contact your US representative & senator now (as we speak?) & ask him/her to boycott Miami & Miami-Dade County. If s/he doesn't know where it is, tell him/her to check the map. It's the fungus stuck onto the south end of Florida! Thanks & please stop asking the name of the hotel because that'll mess up the investigation!! duh! (G) Good choice. If I may recommend it, the USGenWeb Census project, housed at www.rootsweb.com, will provide spreadsheet templates for use in return for the finished product. And the USGenWeb Census project gets more attention than anyone's private URL. Cheryl dnc in tennessee wrote: > > Maybe I'll just pick a old census, 1860 or so. > > I'll take my time and do it right. Dear Carnivale, Indeed day do now call Dade county Miami-Dade county! Wow! I'm sure it's changed a lot since then. Fortunately, I live in the county only, not in the city. I live on a beautiful! island in Biscayne bay from whose vantage point it all looks (I did say Looks!) so wonderful. From the balcony full of tomato (e-less, Dan!) plants, gardenias, purslane, prayer plants, tropical cannas, ad infinitem, I just say "NO", (thanks, Nancy), to the madness that beckons from the west! Madness is right on! Wednesday night at 8:10, I was fired from a job at a top-ranked hotel in downtown Miami. Rank is pivotal word here. Reason: too much whistle blowing, of course! The reader knows me by now. I had been helping with the hotel's guest victims' problems caused by the criminal elmenent: the staff, administration & owners. They're all foreigners and strident anti-Americans. Mind you, I have nothing against law-abiding, constitution-understanding, equal rights-respecting foreigners. In fact, from the gazillion docs I've seen, I'm related to some! But these ones go too far! Americans don't have to go out of the country to be abused. They can enjoy said experience right here in Miami, the one in Miami-Dade County!! The Americans they especially hate and constantly stick it to are the non-Spanish speaking ones. Boy do they go away stucked!!! Their scam is very well done & it produces beaucoup $$$$. They've got 150 rooms, minus 1 suite where the a-- hole AWAB owner from Chelsea, London, England, orchestrates his sado-masochistic bad & gettin' badder business practices. Their prime victims are older, gentler Americans who won't make a scene & who will run away with their tails between their legs. The owner won't mess with the cruise line groups cuz he knows they'll blacklist him in a NY nanominute! What's the scam? Orders are at the reception front desk, that when occupancy reaches 85% to just say NO! to all cheap reservations, even though they were reserved, paid, confirmed & reconfirmed! Why because they can bait & switch that room which they rented for $89 and miraculously (no pun intended for those of religious beliefs) into a wahpping (sorry, Italians, that one was a Neronian slip!) $189. "Sorry, but we don't have any paperwork on your reservation or payment. We never recieved it." Where do day put all the elderly American couples? Where else in the Swappiest hotel in all of greater (or lesser) downtown Miami, the Everglades located 8 blocks away on Biscayne blvd. We are further ordered that, since these poor USA Yanks or Rebels aren't and never have technically been our guests, they cannot use our courtesy (or is it discourtesy) phone to call for help!! Talk about revisionism!! This takes the boat! Do you have any idea how humiliated, embarrased, shamed I was to have to explain & smooth over the owner's decision to all those retirees from OH, PA, MI, MA. Now if the victims were younger & could possibly raise the roof, the staff was ordered to feign a double-take with the company line: "Okay, let me check in the back office! Oh, yes, here's your reservation, right here! Sorry, for the mixup." I went to the Miami Police about this 'issue' yesterday & I was told that it wasn't within their jurisdiction. If the reader can direct me to a forum (sorry, another Neronian slip) from which this info can be broadcast, I and, I suspect, many other Americans would be most appreciative. Welcome to Miami? Maybe I'll just pick a old census, 1860 or so. I'll take my time and do it right. And when I am done make it public domain so no money hungry company can charge for it. Well, who would buy it if it were free is a better way to put it. Hello, My name is Jan Brugge and I am living in the Netherlands. My attention is focused on to map out the family Brugge in Groningen. This branch is originally from Germany. Around 1758, probably in the place Haren-Münsterland. My Great-Great Grandfather Berend Hendriks, a tailor he married Helena (Leentje) Jans on the 16th of November 1781 in a Catholic church in Kleinemeer. This is a hamlet near Sappemeer. Please help me to find people with the family name Brugge and have relation with the Netherlands - Groningen. See for a little impression my Homepage My Regards Jan Brugge http://members.home.nl/jbrugge/ jbrugge@home.nl
If viewer 2 is working on your computer with XP there should be no problems. From what I have heard (I don't have a copy of XP to try myself) some users suffer from problems using Viewer 2 & 3 with XP, yet others claim it runs perfectly. That suggests to me that the problems depends not only on the viewer & operating system but also the hardware used, possibly allocation of memory or even graphics card. I have never had any problems running any of the viewers on various computers even when networked together. Whenever I change any setting I make a note of the original setting first so that if my attempt fails I can change everything back to how it started.
