    1. Old property titles
    2. Don Nickell
    3. Just curious, has anyone had the occasion to look into a little "deserted" town in the southwest looking for the title to one of the dilapidated buildings? Just wondering what's happened to the titles (bill-of-sale?) on some of those buildings. Did the banks lose money on foreclosures? I can imagine the property owner did. I've an accquaintance back in NM who's ancestor formed the town of Hagerman. It's mostly deserted now, there are people living outside town on farms/ranches/etc. Hagerman, NM, like many in the SW (Vaughn, Taiban) are mostly deserted. As I say, just curios. I wouldn't even know where to look for any particular information other than county seats and I now live 1500 miles away. Thanks, Don

I'm told it was changed from > Stoudenmire to the current spelling. One of the first pieces of advice you'll get regarding genealogy is that "spellings change". (The first is "RECORD ALL YOUR SOURCES!!!") At times it was style (in gaelic-speaking areas, M', Mc and Mac are interchangable), at times it was lack of "standardized" spelling. Sometimes it had to do with the person recording the event not knowing the language of the name he/she was recording, others it was that the person recording the event just plain couldn't spell. I think it was Shakespeare whose name is recorded three different ways in the same document? You get the idea... In particular, in your case "i" and "y"are interchangable in most cases. This is why Soundex was invented - to be able to look for alternate spellings of a name. (Hint: http://google.com/search?hl=en&q=soundex, and in particular the second return on that search, http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/coding.html) -- Joe Makowiec can be reached at: makowiec(at)nycap(dot)rr(dot)com

    1. 1883 Military Pensioners
    2. Eric
    3. In 1882, Congress directed the Military Pension Office to prepare a listing of individuals receiving pensions for prior war service. The Pension Office produced a listing called "Pensioners on the Roll" as of January 1, 1883. I have transcribed the list of Military Pensioners that were residing in Adams, Ashland, Barron, Bayfield, Brown, Buffalo, Burnett, Calumet, Chippewa, Iowa, Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe, Richland, Trempealeau, Vernon, and Washington counties. I have recently moved those pages to my new home page on Rootsweb. Go to my home page at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~eborreson/ and scroll all the way down to "Military Pensioners". That link will take you to a page that lists the counties. Select the county and you will be taken to a page that lists the names exactly as they were originally published. Please let me know if you find this of any value. 1. Copyright family tree? (old thread)
    2. James W. Anderson
    3. I spotted an old thread that I'd somehow missed. Here are some helps on the issue of copyrighting family trees. You still own the copyright to the tree, even if it is published elsewhere. I know it's not clear regarding some people who publish compiled family trees on CD, but the LDS Church and its Pedigree Resource File is very clear on it. You may publish it elsewhere (Ancestry, MyTrees, WFT, etc.,) My best option for publishing would be the Pedigree Resource File provided by the LDS Church and whose master index can be found at http://www.familysearch.org/. That's because the person who provides the data has to upload it himself. Uploading is the only way to submit to this file. That's different from some companies who allegedly 'slurp up' data from elsewhere. The LDS Church also provides the data for the cost of manufacture. No profits, no gimmicks. Just your data preserved, and nothing else. Include your notes. Another plus: Your notes are only on the CDs, not the online index. But enough information is provided to make a fairly educated assumption that your target in your research is the right one, and you can buy the set it's on after it appears online. They even provide a way to find out if the file got on the CD, what CD it's on, and what set of five to buy. You need to submit a GEDCOM file via the net. Include notes, prepare group records (as part of creating the pedigree), and even pictures, etc., that would be useful to anyone finding the file. Include all relevant source notes and data. Also, don't worry if you don't have everything now, you can resend a new file with the updates for a future CD later. Also, these CDs are more widely available than any of the FTM CDs or similar products, as many LDS Family History Centers now have them. And at $20 for a set of five or $63 for the Discs 1-25 set its a steal price-wise. Also, they are ONLY available from the LDS Church as well. PLEASE submit your data via familysearch.org if you haven't already done so. Sorry for the 'shameless plug' in an artcle about copyright issues, but this is by far the best deal and the safest one for all concerned. Speaking of the copyright matters, the Church copyrights the CDs to prevent wholesale copying of large tracts of data from them. People can only take what is relevant to them and they cannot republish it wholesale. But you or your family can, if you wish. Someone did that with the IGI years ago, it was poorly done, and they got into some real trouble for what they did.

    3. Seeking any info on Mary King born around 1930 or so whose mother's maiden name was SUSAN GAGAIN born 1898 in Waterbury, CT. USA Susan had a brother John Gagain born 1900 in Waterbury , CT. USA. They both were taken back to Ireland by their mother Mary (DOONAN) Gagain around 1901/02 after the father died. John Gagain came back to the USA in 1926 to Milford , CT. USA . and his wife to be (Annie REILLY ) came in 1930 and married in Milford CT. USA 1930. JOHN GAGAIN and ANNIE REILLY are my Grand parents) Susan Gagain stayed in Ireland and married at some point to a "KING" whether before or after John Gagain came back to the USA is unknown at this time. Susan Gagain KING and her family lived in London . My mother (Susan Marie Gagain b1932 in Milford , Connecticut, USA) and Mary King were Cousin and used to write to each other but I think it stopped around the 1950's. I have no idea where the Gagain's came from in Ireland , and I have no idea were Susan and John Gagain lived in Ireland when their mother took them back to Ireland, but it may have been Co. Cavan ,(just a guess). Now for Mary Doonan Gagain ,I have no idea where she came from in Ireland or who her parents are. She may have married a Farrell after she went back to Ireland in 1901/02. If the prints are fragile, be careful about letting inexperienced persons handle them. I have not been impressed with the level of professionalism on the part of office store personnel. Their training is usually limited to being able to duplicate letters, documents, etc. They may not be familiar with the subtleties of photo scanning, especially as it relates to setting the high, low and gamma points. If you still want to have the job done by someone else, I would look for firms that specialize in digital photo restoration (there are tons of them listed on internet search engines). At least you will be dealing with people that are familiar with scanning old photos, as opposed to documents (which are, essentially, "line-art" types of scans). Have a look at www.scantips.com for some excellent information about how to properly scan photographs. Once you've seen this information, I think you'll agree that people in office superstores are probably not going to produce the type of scans you require. Sometimes, when you want it done right, you have to do it yourself . . . Larry
