I have been trying to find my G-Uncle ELIJAH HAMLER (NJ) since the verbal family story that "he went, under-age, into the Civil War." The story also says that he was a drummer. Well, I can find no record of him after the Civil War. Does anyone know how to find their underage soldier ancestors from the Civil War? Is there any web site for this specialty? I have looked up all the usual information: Census Records where all the rest of the 9 members of the family were living- everyone accounted for except Elijah; marriage records for New Jersey; death records for New Jersey; property records for New Jersey; Baptism records for New York (where the Hamlers tended to go for baptisms) and New Jersey; Pennsylvanvia Census records; books on German migration in the 1800's with names... What happened with "under-age" soldiers in the Civil War? Did they have an especially high rate of mortality? Is it likely that Elijah died? His older two brothers who fought in the Civil War (from New Jersey) served in Virginia; but they both came home from the Civil War. Elijah was born in 1846, making him 16 years old when the war started. Thanks for any help. Flanagan

There seem to be proven soldiers, on both sides, who were as young as 12. 2. The younger ones were usually assigned as flag-bearer/pennant-carrier and often were in the fore-front of the charge. People in the front row DID have a high mortality rate, regardless of their age. 3. There is, I am told, a website where you can check the names of Union soldiers receiving pensions. I don't have the URL and know nothing further about it. You might try finding it to see what happens. 4. And of course the things you don't mention: the Adjutant-General's office of almost every state that WAS a state by 1890 has a list of their known veterans; you might consult them. Or, in the meantime, contact NARA for their form and see if there's a service record on him. The 1890 Special Census (much of which is on-line at the USGenWeb sites) lists all Union veterans who are living in 1890. Cheryl
Is the Web Page for CA Births, http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/birth/search.cgi , now dead along with some of the TX sites?
Our obituary citation database was updated this morning and now has over 170,000 listings. Cemetery Junction http://www.cemeteryjunction.com/ Happy Hunting! - illya d'addezio
We're all getting ready to view the 1930 census, released April 1. My regional (Boston) office is opening at midnight! Evidently the only one doing so. Today's paper had a big story about this, and included these two URLs that might prove helpful. This one either gives you the Enumeration District for large cities, or tells you how to find it (i.e. what film roll). You need the exact street address for this to work. http:home.pacbell.net/spmorse/census The following is not up yet (it says "mid-March") and will tell which ED's cover an entire community adn what microfilm the ED's are on. http://1930census.archives.gov Reminder: to help in your 1930 census searches, there is a Rootsweb "City directories" list on which volunteers will find addresses. The NARA regional offices, or at least Boston, have hundreds of city directories on microfilm. Getting your family addresses nailed down ahead of time is a good idea. The 1930 census is largely unindexed, except for a few Southern states. JHall

Fairly high magnification is required for most fiche. Others will have to reply regarding a source for microfiche readers intended for operation at UK line voltage. A local library may have one which you can use to read your microfiche (and might suggest a local dealer/serviceman who could have previously-owned units for sale).
Please can anybody help me? I am new to genealogy and have obtained some micro fiches which I can not read. Can I buy an adapter for my scanner or where can I buy a cheap reader please. Regards Mike mike@farmme.globalnet.co.uk

Dear List, My genealogy society is trying to get a government grant for census records for our state. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks! Gretchen
Ques: find apparent 'left page' but not the 'right page': Ellis Island Ships' manifests. ---- Name is Ernest Mickleborough age 20 merchant from London - line 731 on the manifest of 'The Germania' docking on August 22, 1985. ---- The suggestion that there may have been only one page at that time makes good sense. Since asking my question I have researched other ships manifests and if there are two pages it is obvious from the heading on the pages. The heading has been left off these pages - or perhaps there was no heading either. I am going to look for more manifests of the year 1895 - have found two others that seem to have only one page also, thus far. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Jayne

I have recently come across some information on a moderately distant relative of mine, who died in October 1981, and am wondering if SKS may be able to check a few sources to see if I can find out more details of his family. Some of the sources I'm thinking of are death/obit notices in the local papers, will/probate indexes, etc. His Name was Lionel Jack ASHWIN (SS# 472-01-6621), born 29 Jun 1898 England, and died Oct 1981 Minneapolis. It appears he lived mostly in Minnesota after he arrived in the USA. I was uncertain what records may be available for Minneapolis in this time period, hence the rather general heading. I'll be grateful for whatever information I can get. TIA Kevin Ettery
I am looking for background on Seminaries near Attica, NY in the 1850s for a paper I am writing on pre Civil War Attica. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
