    1. Re: NYC/Bronx Marriage Records 1907
    2. Linda Scheimann
    3. I have the same situation in 1912 in Wisconsin with grandparents who were definitely married in the Lutheran church, large reception, newspaper article, etc. You need to remember that for legal purposes, common law marriages were valid in most states until World War II or after. So there was no need to get a civil license to have the protections of marriage, although you were taking your chances the first few years or until a child was born. I think the desire to qualify for survivors' benefits under Social Security after 1937 also will have increased the desireability of a state marriage license. To this day, I don't think it's "law" to record marriages in the sense that a minister does not need a license to perform a religious ceremony. Off the top of my head, I would guess there are some denominations that in fact would object to a civil record. Old Order Amish come to mind, not sure about this. Linda Scheimann

If you've a US "Civil War" era James ATKINSON, you may want to hunt up the "Atkinson family tree lists" (sorry, that all my info gives). Apparently, there is a farm in Colonial Beach, Virginia which has MANY more than one grave marker for him. I'm told details were posted on those family tree lists.

    3. I've tried several browsers including vivisimo and have found much better hits on my surnames with google! Searching on the very rare surname of Clingdanel I got 10 unique hits with google and only 6 hits with vivisimo. My Fludder surname brought 581 hits on google and only 109 on vivisimo (when will people ever learn that a heart will "flutter", not "fludder" and that the swimming kick is a "flutter" kick, not a "fludder" kick!) I do,however, like the "outline" view of vivisimo. That's pretty close to a filter, but if I'm missing that many hits, what good is it??? Now, if there were only a search engine that used an "ignore" a hit if it included certain words on a page or previous hits or that would save searches (supposed I could save the pages in html).... I'd also like to see a search engine respect quotes around a phrase "william walton nowell" does *not* mean I want all instances of where william and walton and nowell show up on a web page! 3. Maybe because we don't know if they are realted to us. Post their ahnentafael here. You will only get nibbles from that. There are lots of Owens and lots of Deans. We're not in the habit of buying every Dean book out there because there's just too many DSeans and it would break our budget rather quickly. You have to show that we are related somehow and a quick Ahnentafael would do that. "R.E. 3. I used it for some time yesterday and found a dozen things for my main line that I'd never seen before. One thing I like about Vivisimo is the category "tree", it's almost a filter for the user to select things he knows aren't of interest to him; something other search engines don't do. For instance in my NICKELL line there is Joe Nickell the Paranormal Investigator for the Skeptical Inquirer magazine (debunked the Shroud of Tourin, etc.). He had a category all his own with many hits that I could ignore. One "newspaper (article)" opened up a whole new slant on the Bruce NICKELL murder by his wife, commonly called the "Tylenoyl Posoning Case of Seattle (1986)" And the authors seem to be thinking, almost every hit can be opened with a New Browser, akin to <A HREF .... TARGET="_BLANK">, that spawns a new browser screen. I wish more Web Page programmers would use that technique so you don't have to reload the previous page for quick looks at "page 2". I Vivisimo well enough I've modified my Netscape Search button to open Vivisimo rather than Google Advanced. As I noted earlier, it will take a little getting used to because it is a little different in format.
