The first major railroad to operate in the US was the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, which started in the state of Maryland. It began operations in 1829/1830, so given the birth date of your relative, it is possible, but I think unlikely that he was operating a locomotive then. By 1854, the state of Ohio had about 2,000 miles (my guess) of rail lines in it, including a number with "Ohio" in their name, such as the Ohio Central. There were other rail lines in adjacent states that also had the word "Ohio" in their names, such as the Chesapeake and Ohio, and the aforementioned B&O, all adding to the total possible mileage. Given the above, your relative could have lived in far too many places to easily narrow down the search without additional information.

It was intended to run from Manhattan to Sandusky City. It never actually began operations, and ended up in scandal. Look here: http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Lucas/LucasCommunicationChapI.htm down toward the end of the document. No mention of Peter Connelly that I noticed, tho. John

    3. Hi gang, I'm hoping someone in this group can assist with my query, either with the info I'm after, or by pointing me to the appropriate site(s). I have recently come across a copy of an article about an ancestor of mine, and am hoping to confirm or refute a claim it makes. The claim is that this gent, Peter CONNELLY, was the man who ran the first pilot engine over the Ohio Railway. It does not detail which railroad, and the timeframe is pre 1854 (he was born 1812 in Galway, Ireland and had emigrated to Australia by 1854). Can anyone assist? Regards Kevin Ettery

You can use HTML without going onto the internet. You refer to local files rather than URL's. There is a program out there called something like ged2html. It takes a GED file and generates a set of linked HTML files that work just like they were on the internet. The problem is that you have to have one GED file to generate the whole thing. It would probably be possible to generate a set of HTML files for each of your GED files and then write your own HTML file to link them all together. The search problem doesn't fit into this mold, however. For that you need some sort of database system.

    3. You might try http://www.freefind.com/. Your site would have to be on the internet though. If you are running a Windows based system, you may be able to use the Windows Search feature. If you are using MS Frontpage to create your in-house web site, look in HELP for SEARCH and you will find: About search forms You can create a search form to let site visitors search your web site for specific words or phrases. When site visitors enter text in the search form and click the search button, they will get a list of your web pages with content that matches their search criteria. Microsoft FrontPage carries out the search and returns the names and locations of your web pages that contain that text. The easiest way to create a search form is to create a new page based on the Microsoft FrontPage Search Page template. You can customize the template with your own introductory text, copyright information, button labels, and so on. And it continues.................. You might also look for the GENEALOGY SOFTWARE newsgroup and post a question there. Reduce shelf space; and help in introducing researchers to the use of web based systems and how to use them.
