There have always been Mohawks in the St. Lawrence Valley in the post-contact era. There's one reservation in New York and at least two more in Quebec. There was also another group called the Algonkins and another the Montagnais. I may be spelling it wrong. For instance, Ohio was the homeland of the Erie Indians. The Mohawks wiped out them out in the Beaver Wars. Later the Delawares, Shawnees, Miamis and Senecas moved into their land in an effort to escape the westward expansion of the Europeans.
