Or even Boston papers. I know ships leaving from New York went to Liverpool mainly - I've found several of mine this way enroute to Australia. I have no idea if passports were being used in UK but it seems perhaps they were in the US in a haphazzard arrangement. My great-grandfather got a passport from New York in 1853 as did his friend, but others of that year coming to Australia do not appear to have done so. His daughter was born in the US in 1867 while her mother was visiting the US. Her parents who lived in Australia were both American. Her father had become naturalised British subject (Australia) in 1863, so she was considered Australian/British subject.
