I think the info you gave might be to vague to pinpoint him in the censuses. If you take into account that the surnames on censuses are often misspelled & search with the name "Peterson" & assume he went by Peter, there are a few possibilities for him on the census in Mass. alone -- none seem to be an obvious match for the info you gave.
