Helen - More recent research has failed to find proof of Mary's surname. In the sketch for Henry and his family in Vol. II of Robert Charles Anderson, George F. Sanborn, Jr. and Melinde Lutz Sanborn, "The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England 1634-1635" (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001), her name is given as "Mary _____." >There was another possibility in the book, but >wrong--Bethia EWELL. She was his older sister. Bethia was Gershom's younger sister, born 27-Sep-1653 [Scituate VR 1:148]. Gershom was born 14-Nov-1650 [Scituate VR 1:149]. >John1, b. 1699 in Scituate m. Note that the 1733 marriage took place in Boston, and I think it likely that it was the marriage of a member of the family of Henry's oldest son John, who lived in Boston. I think it more likely that John, son of Gershom, married in or near Scituate about 1727, as several children of John Euel/Ewell were baptized in Scituate beginning in 1728 [Scituate VR 148-149], and his father Gershom stayed in Scituate, as shown by his probate file [Plymouth Co. Probate 1:273-274]. >I was told that John EWELL, Henry's father was born in >Scotland. From the passenger list of the Hercules we know that Henry Ewell was from Sandwich, Kent, England, but I know of no research showing his ancestry. Dale H.
