Hello, Someone e-mailed me this morning about my husband's MOURA great-grandparents. That reminded me that I never found out whether his grandmother's 2 brothers married in MA before they moved out of the state. And I don't know where they lived before they moved out of state. This is his great-grandmother who arrived from the Azores ~1911 with her youngest child: MOURA, PHOEBE (1920 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 1-WD CAMBRIDGE Age: 46, Female, Race: WHITE, Born: PORT Series: T625 Roll: 707 Page: 7 Her official name was Philomena (sp?) MOURA and this means she was prob. born ~1875. With her at this time is her daughter, Carolina "Carrie" MOURA, Age 12. Carrie would have been born ~1908. Phoebe's oldest child was Elsie MOURA born ~1893. So, the 3 middle children were born between 1893 and 1908, with "Rosie" reportedly being the 2nd child. So, her 2 sons, "Frank" and "Mannie," would have been born between 1895 and 1907. The 1920 census has 19 people in MA with the MOURA name, with 11 of them in Bristol County. One of the men is a Francisco, 19, living as a boarder in a hotel or rooming house: MOURA, FRANCISCON (1920 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , BRISTOL, 2-WD NEW BEDFORD Age: 19, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: PORT Series: T625 Roll: 685 Page: 90 He could be Phoebe's son. It says he arrived in 1919, which means he arrived ~8 years after his mother did. There are 3 Manuel MOURA's in Bristol Co. in 1920, but they are in their 30's to 50's. So, they were not younger than Elsie, who was 27 in this census with her husband. (correct name PACHECO). But, the "family story" could be wrong, perhaps Manny was the first child. PACHICO, TONY (1920 U.S. Census) MASSACHUSETTS , MIDDLESEX, 2-WD CAMBRIDGE Age: 34, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: PORT Series: T625 Roll: 707 Page: 49 The "Ellis Island Museum" has other MOURA people heading to Brooklyn, NY, around this time. My "suspicion" is that Phoebe's husband either "died at sea" as a whaler, or the couple "separated" and Francisco "Frank" MOURA went to Brooklyn - when she went to Cambridge. At some point their son, Manuel "Manny" MOURA, moved to Brooklyn, NY, and remained there. At some point, (son) Francisco "Frank" MOURA, moved to California - reportedly to "wine country" and remained there. I cannot access the 1930 census, and I wondered whether someone could try to find "Frank" MOURA in MA or CA and "Manny" MOURA in MA on NY. Thank you for your time. Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: "Phoebe" MOURA died in the 1940's, so she should be in the 1930 census. "Carrie" had married Frank MEDEIROS, but I think during the 1920's in Somerville. "Rosie" married Charles PERRY (prob PEREIRA) and they were living in Somerville in 1920 census. (5 siblings)
