    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Map of MA (Charlestown before 1750)
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, This is a good time to remind researchers that there are 2 ways to get a 'free' map of MA. And, the same goes for any state in the US. One is to contact the Tourism Office for each state. I believe most of them offer a 'free' "Travel Guide" and it includes a map. http://www.massvacation.com/ (Just Google "Massachusetts Tourism" for example.) The other is to write to the Dept. of Transportation at the State House, and request that a 'free' "MA Official Transportation Map" be mailed out to you. www.mass.gov http://www.sec.state.ma.us/seccon.htm http://www.eot.state.ma.us/ I just noticed that, if you scroll down to the bottom of that page, you can access an on-line map of MA. And, if you are talking about towns and cities in Greater Boston, you can click on the "MBTA" section and find maps of MA related to the buses, trolleys, and trains, etc. For instance, the "Orange Line" has the Sullivan Square Station which is on the border of Charlestown and Somerville. http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/lines/stations/?stopId=14490&lat=42.383434&lng=-71.077056 This page offers a brief history of Charlestown. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlestown,_Massachusetts (My ancestor, George HUTCHINSON, and his brother's widow, Mrs. Thomas HUTCHINSON, initially settled in Charlestown. But, this is a reminder that sometimes settling in one place might mean that your piece of land might end up in an adjoining town - because of the new town annexing off. So, in my case, the George's son and descendants might have initially lived in Charlestown, but some lived in Woburn in a section which later became Winchester. So, for this important research, I needed to learn the history of 3 towns, at least.) The territory of Charlestown originally included what is now Stoneham (until 1725), Somerville (until 1842), Medford, Malden, Everett, Woburn, Burlington, and parts of Arlington and Cambridge. And: http://newenglandtowns.org/massachusetts/charlestown These sites remind us of the "historical things to see" in Charlestown: http://www.ussconstitutionmuseum.org/ http://www.charlestownonline.net/ History of Woburn: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woburn,_Massachusetts (Winchester and Arlington didn't receive those names until the 1800's.) Hope this helps. Betty (near Lowell, MA) .. Hope you get outside this weekend !! Especially if you live in New England !! Last weekend, while driving south on Rt. 3, I saw a car passing us with "skiis" on top of the car. Then we saw a car on the northbound side - with a "canoe" on top of the car. "You know you live in New England when ......"
