Subject: Benjamin Whitney Source: Genealogical & Family History of the State of Maine Benjamin Whitney, youngest son of John Whitney, the emigrant, England to Watertown, Mass. and John Whitney's wife, Elinor, was born at Watertown June 6, 1643. He m. (1) Jane ____ who died Nov 14, 1690. He m. (2) April 11, 1695, Mary Poor of Marlborough, Mass. He witnessed at York, Maine in 1662, 1666 and 1668, respectively, agreements of John Doves. He was in Cocheco, N.H. near Dover in 1667-1668 and April 13, 1674. The Selectmen of York, Maine, laid out ten acres of upland for Benjamin Whitney but in spite of the wishes of his father, who desired him to return to Watertown and receive from his father a deed for about seventeen acres of land at Watertown bounded by land of John Sherman, Willbird and Martin Under- wood, April 5, 1670, Benjamin Whitney and Jane by consent of their father deeded the land so consigned to Joshua, for forty pounds and thus relinquished all his rights to his father's estate. In 1635, Benjamin Whitney and Jane Whitney of York, Maine, sold and conveyed land in Watertown to Jonathan Sayward. His wife died at York, Maine November 14, 1690 after she had given birth at Watertown to seven children: 1. Jane Whitney b. at Watertown, Mass., Sept 29, 1669 m. in Sherbourne, Mass. Jan. 4, 1693, Jonathan Morse. 2. Timothy Whitney of York, Maine, was a member of Captain Preble's company raised in 1703 for the defence against the Indians. 3. John Whitney of York, Maine, about 1678, m. Letty Ford. 4. Nathaniel Whitney (q.v.) April 14, 1680. p.809 5. Jonathan Whitney, 1681, m. Susanna Whitney. 6. Benjamin Whitney who m. Esther Maverick, widow. 7. Joshua Whitney, September 21, 1687, m. Hannah Rockwood. Children of second marriage: 8. Mark Whitney, about 1700, m. Tabitha Miller. 9. Isaac Whitney m. Elizabeth Bridges. Upon his 2nd marriage he located at Sherbourne, Mass. where his two younger children were born and where he died in 1723. (III) Nathaniel Whitney, the 3rd son of Benjamin & Jane Whitney, was born at York, Maine, April 14, 1680. He m. Sarah, dau. of John Ford, of Kittery, Maine, born at York, Maine. They removed to Gorham, Maine and in 1703, he joined the military company at York raised to defend the settlers against the Indians. He was a weaver at Kittery, Maine, but also purchased land at York, Maine, includ- ing twenty acres of John Rockleft, for twenty pounds. He died at Gorham, Maine. His children: 1. Nathan Whitney b. Jan 10, 1706; m. Lydia Young. 2. Nathaniel Whitney b. Dec. 12, 1709; m. Molly Day. 3. Abel Whitney (q.v.) 4. Sarah Whitney b. Nov 8, 1714; m. Jeremiah Simpson. 5. Lydia Whitney who died July 14, 1720. 6. Isaac Whitney b. Mar 9, 1720 m. Sarah Crosby. 7. Amos Whitney b. Mar 5, 1723; m. Sarah Payne. 8. Lydia Whitney b. July 22, 1726; died March 23, 1727. 9. Joanna Whitney b. March 13, 1729. (IV) Abel Whitney the 3rd son of Nathaniel & Sarah (Ford) Whitney, was born at York, Maine, July 23, 1712. He married, November 28, 1735, Mary, a daughter of Nicholas Cram and he lived at York, Maine and Gorham and Standish, Maine. His children; 1. Joanna Whitney, October 10, 1736. 2. Moses Whitney b. Feb 17, 1738. 3. Joseph Whitney b. Mar 1, 1739. 4. Daniel Whitney b. Sept 7, 1741; died before 1754. 5. Joel Whitney (q.v.) 6. May Whitney, b. Oct 5, 1744. 7. Lydia Whitney b. July 31, 1746. 8. Zebulon Whitney b. Nov 27, 1747; m. Joanna Stone. 9. Joanna Whitney b. Sept 27, 1749. 10. Naphthali Whitney b. Feb 10, 1750. 11. Micha Whitney b. Dec 11, 1752; m. Hannah Cobb. 12. Daniel Whitney b. Sept 27, 1754. (V) Joel Whitney, a son of Abel & Mary (Cram) Whitney, was born at the old town of York, Maine, May 21, 1743. He removed to Falmouth, now Portland, Maine, where he was m. to Mary Weston and moved thence to Chandler's River. His wife was a sister of Josiah Weston whose wife Hannah, was the first girl of English parentage and the first child born in the settlement, which was known as Chandler's River, up to 1789, when the land comprising the settlement was granted to John C. Jones of Massachusetts and he gave the place the name of Jonesboro. Ephraim, brother of Hannah and eldest son of Joel & Mary (Weston) Whitney, was the first white boy born in the settlement. Joel Whitney in the affairs of the town and his judgment was much relied on in busi- ness matters. He left his estate, which consisted of lands, mills and other property, to the charge of his son, Ephraim Whitney. He had built a log house at the end of the mill dam on the south side of Chandler's river, and he died there in 1789. Children: Hannah Whitney, Mary Whitney, Ephraim (q.v.) Whitney, Reuben, Abel, Joel and Porter Whitney. (VI) Captain Ephraim Whitney, the eldest son of Joel and Mary (Weston) Whitney, was born at Chandler's River, Maine, Nov. 7, 1770, the first white child born in that place. He was Captain of a company of militia, a Representative in the General Court of Massachusetts, for ten success- ive years, assessor of the town of Jonesboro, Maine, Selectman, Treasur- er and Agent of the town and held the office of Postmaster for several years. The first town meeting held at Jonesboro, Maine, March 27, 1809, was announced by him. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention held in 1820 to frame a constitution for the new State of Maine, and he represented the town of Jonesboro in the first Maine State Legislature that met after it was separated from Massachusetts and was admitted into the sisterhood of the States, and he was again elected as Representative and took an active part in the early legislature so incorporated to the stability and growth of the new State. He married, July 9, 1794, Sarah Noyes. Children: Gustavus F., (q.v.) Mary, Betsey, Beriah who m. Lucy Hall; Phoebe, Joel, Sophia, Ann, Nancy, Porter, Josiah and Clara. (VII) Gustavus Fellows Whitney, the eldest child of Ephraim & Sarah (Noyes) Whitney, was born at Jonesboro, Maine, June 8, 1822. He married Hannah Libby and their daughter, Sarah Whitney, born at Jonesboro, Maine, married John Fogg Lord, of Centerville, Maine and they had tow children: Mirriam and Laura Helen Whitney, mentioned above.
