    3. Found the following on Stanford Univ. Library site: http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/chapter8/index.html "As a general rule, most works enter the public domain because of old age. This includes any work published in the United States before 1923. Another large block of works are in the public domain because they were published before 1964 and copyright was not renewed. (Renewal was a requirement for works published before 1978.) ..." "... If a work was first published before 1964, the owner had to file a renewal with the Copyright Office during the 28th year after publication. No renewal meant a loss of copyright. "If you plan on using a work that was published after 1922, but before 1964, you should research the records of the Copyright Office to find if a renewal was filed. Chapter 13 describes methods of researching copyright status." As this work was published between 1922 and 1964, it would be in the public domain only if the owner didn't file a renewal during the 28th year. Let see 1948 + 28 = 1978. Hmmmmm Holzman died in 1947 and her Stevens - Miller was published in 1948!!! The copyright is definitely credited to her in this book as: "COPYRIGHT 1948 BY WINFRED LOVERING HOLMAN Privately Printed at the The Rumford Press, Concord, New Hanpshire" As there is no way she could have renewed the copyright in 1978, this book should now be in Public Domain. 3. Opppssss, I misread the copyright. It is to Winifred Lovering Holman - not to the author Mary Lovering Holman. Winifred was probably her daughter. I haven't found any dates on Winifred. She was probably living in 1978 and could have renewed the copyright. --- Susan At 03:43 PM 4/23/2009, Susan Taylor wrote: >Found the following on Stanford Univ.
