    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] History of Cambridge - first residents

    3. Hello, In the "MassMoments" daily e-mail this week there is a brief history of how Cambridge was created. A site was chosen for "Newtowne" in 1630. http://www.massmoments.org:80/moment.cfm?mid=372 It was also 1630 when 11 ships set sail for the MA Bay Colony. While looking at the FROST patriarchs within the past few days, I read that Edmund FROST settled in Cambridge. I'm finding different kinds of references, but it appears he arrived in 1635. I haven't looked at my ancestor, Francis MOORE, in a long while, but he also settled in Cambridge in 1630's, along with a couple other MOORE / MORE men. And it's possible he was a neighbor of Edmund FROST. ** I think it would be interesting to see a list of the men / families who were living in Cambridge in the 1630's. ** And, then a list of the men / families who settled in Cambridge in 1640's. My ancestor, James KIDDER, seemingly arrived ~1649, and shortly after married a daughter of Francis MOORE. My ancestor, Edmund RICE, seemingly arrived ~1638 but went directly to Sudbury. * Just curious who was living in Cambridge between 1630 and 1650. (I think one of the "histories of Cambridge" is on-line; I'll have to check on that.) Betty (near Lowell, MA) HAPPY NEW YEAR !! * As I mentioned yesterday, Edmund RICE, married a Thomasine FROST. But, if there was any connection between the patriarch, Edmund FROST, and Edmund RICE's wife, it would have been in the mid-1500's in Co. Suffolk, England. FYI: It would have been my father's grandparents: George "Sanford" KIDDER and his wife, Louise W. RICE, who would have had all of the above ancestors. Oh, almost forgot the patriarch, Bray WILKINS, but he first settled in Dorchester ~1634. Oh, that reminds me of the patriarch, George HUTCHINSON, who arrived in Charlestown ~1630. And patriarch, Simon CROSBY, arrived in Cambridge in 1635. I know about "the KIDDER book," and "the CROSBY book," and "the Bray WILKINS book" and just found out that "the FROST book" is on-line at Google/Books. As I've mentioned before, it is very disappointing that there is no "MOORE book" and no "HUTCHINSON book." (It is my "educated guess" that my ancestor, Samuel WILKINS, b~1775, was descended from Bray WILKINS.)
