I post another archive document that may be of interest to anyone researching SWAN. I wonder if there is a name index of the Mass Archives Revolutionary War records Volumes 144 (may be lower too) to 186 (may be higher too)? Vols 161to 163 are supposedly Returns of polls and valuations of towns in Mass. and Maine, usually arranged by County, including 1778/9 census of polls (males over the age of 16), 1779, and 1781 to 1786. Does anyone have any knowledge of these? Ed in Scotland MA167:104 To the Honbl Council of the State of Massachusetts Bay The Petition of James Swan...???? in Boston Herewith That there is a private, named John Bowen who was taken in this harbour & made prisoner of War with many other of the British 71st Regt. That he was a servant in your Petitioner's house for some time, till observing him to be writing to some of his officers, he had him committed to gaol, in which he has continued several months, and contracted from his severe confinement disorders of the body. That in compassion to his sufferings, and not doubting of his better behaviour in future, Your petitioner Prays that the Honbl Board, to grant liberty for the said prisoner to go into service in his house again, so long as he shall behave himself as a prisoner ought to do, unless previously called for by your Honors, or the Commisssary of Prisoners or by any Officer whose business it may have for an exchange or any other purpose and he your Petitioner, from Duty bound, shall ever pray.
