    1. [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Hi Margaret,
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ginnyc01 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.massachusetts.unknown/7376.8.1.1.1.2.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Is it possible for you to do a look up for me in the Globe archives? My great-grandfather, Edward Francis Jones, b. c1843 in Woodstock New Brunswick, migrated to Maine and later on to Massachusetts. He died on 8 May 1874. While in Houlton Maine, he worked on a newspaper, the "Aroostoook Times." On May 24, 1874 the "Times" carried an obituary, stating that Edward had died in Santa Barbara, CA. No cause of death was given. I can find no record of him dying in Santa Barbara (I even contacted the Santa Barbara Genealogical Society and they did a search for me that was a dead end). He fought in the Civil War, mustered out in January 1866, and settled in Athol MA, where he founded a newspaper, "The Athol Transcript". He married in 1868, settled in Athol and fathered 3 children. I can find no reason for him leaving his wife, children and business for California, even if his health was failing, and no record of him on any of the California census lists. Also, his death recor! d isn't in either MA or CA vital records. He is buried in Athol, along with his wife. Possibly, where he ran a Massachusetts newspaper, the Globe might have run a small obituary at the time of his death? Anything you can come up with would be a great help. He is the most frustrating of my "brick walls." Thank you. Ginny Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
