I hope you can get those newspaper articles offered to you by Irish 716. Good work, Irish! The articles I think are being referenced describe Josephine Sederquist's leading role in a 1922 strike by the Textile Workers' Union of Manchester, NH. I am wondering about your father's date of birth There is an entry on NewEnglandAncestors.org as follows Name: Howard Augustin SEDERQUIST Date Aug 13, 1914 Location: Manchester, New Hampshire, United States Record Type: Baptism Church: St. Augustine I would strongly recommend that you write to the church to try to obtain a copy of that baptismal record for two reasons. First, was your father really born 5 Jul 1912, as indicated on the SS death index, or was he really born in 1914? Is there an error on the above entry? (possible). You should probably ask the church secretary to check both years. Second, does the record say anything about either of the child's parents being absent or deceased, or any other clues? St Anne - St Augustin Parish 383 Beech Street Manchester, NH 03103 Phone: (603) 623-8809 Fax: (603) 626-1517 Howard Sederquist is listed in the City Directories of Manchester, NH for the years 1914 and 1915 as follows: 1914 http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=8775&path=Manchester.1914.S.16&sid=&gskw= 1915 http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=8775&path=Manchester.1915.S.9&sid=&gskw= Keep in mind that the information for the city directory is collected during the prior year. So the 1915 Manchester City Directory has a copyright of 1914. The data is usually collected during the summer-fall of the year. Did you notice that the stillborn birth record I referenced states that the infant was born alive? If so, surely he was not conceived on or after Howard's marriage to Annie Pellerin in Sep 1914. Of course, this record doesn't state the length of gestation. Perhaps Annie was already pregnant when they were married. Perhaps it was a "marriage of convenience" and Howard was still actually married to Josephine???? Surely, if Howard Byron Sederquist, a resident of Manchester, died between 1914 and 1919, you would think that there would be something in the Manchester newspaper about it. I don't find a death record for him. I see that Harvey Sederquist joined the army during WWI Name: Harvey D. Sederquist Serial Number: 3161396 Birth Place: Nova Scotia, Canada Birth Date: 12 Jan 1889 Residence: Cumberland Ctr. Comment: Ind: Portland, Cumberland Co. No. 1, July 25/18. Private. Org: Co C 36 MG Bn to disch. Overseas service: None. Hon disch SCD: Aug. 28, 1918. You probably already have the record of your father's first marriage: Marriage Howard A. Sederquist and Edna Booth Manchester, NH Feb 4, 1931 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11815-71732-9?cc=1520640&wc=7131755 I notice that on the 1930 census, Mattie, now the widow of John Sederquist, acknowledges that Howard is her nephew. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=1930usfedcen,&rank=0&=,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,&gsfn=howard&gsln=sederquist&sx=&gs1co=2,USA&gs1pl=1,All States&year=&yearend=&sbo=0&sbor=&ufr=0&wp=4;_80000002;_80000003&srchb=r&prox=1&ti=0&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=35&fh=0&h=22815103&recoff= I see that your own father went to sea during the period 1943-1944. See Ancestry's New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 I am not positive that this is the same Josephine Sederquist, -- it might not be-- more research needed..... but a Josephine Sederquist married James Sheehan in 1929 in St. John's County, Florida (Vol 83, #11333) http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=FLmarriageindex,&rank=0&gsfn=josephine &gsln=sederquist&sx=&gs1co=2,USA&gs1pl=12,Florida&year=&yearend=&sbo=0&sbor=&ufr=0&wp=4;_80000002;_80000003&srchb=r&prox=1&ti=0&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&o_iid=21416&o_lid=21416&o_sch=Web Property&pcat=34&fh=0&h=293223&recoff=5 6 We find them on the 1930 census James and Josephine Sheehan, Miami, Dade, Florida, http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=6224&iid=4531932_00340&fn=Josephine&ln=Sheehan&st=r&ssrc=&pid=102659712 On that census, Josephine is listed as age 39, born in Massachusetts, which would match Josephine Sophie Benoit's birth in Lowell MA 24 Jul 1891. 1940 census James E. and Josephine S. Sheehan, Miami, Dade, FL http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1940usfedcen&indiv=try&h=129631304 Again, Josephine S. is listed as born in Massachusetts, but the age is a bit off. 1945 Florida Census James and Josephine Sheehan http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=1506&iid=CSUSAFL1867_089301-00443&fn=Josephine&ln=Sheehan&st=r&ssrc=&pid=3495097 James Sheehan is a Golf Pro! Ancestry lists her death in the Florida Death Index, 1877-1998 Name: Josephine Sheehan Death Date: 17 Jun 1974 County of Death: Dade State of Death: Florida Age at Death: 78 Race: White Birth Date: 23 May 1896 But the Social Security Death Index lists her as born in 1891 Social Security Death Index Name: Josephine Sheehan SSN: 267-30-4759 Last Residence: 33136 Miami, Miami-dade, Florida, United States of America Born: 22 May 1891 Died: Jun 1974 State (Year) SSN issued: Florida (Before 1951) I know the birth date is off, but we know from experience that birth dates on death records are often inaccurate, because the living survivors might not know the correct information. I suggest you try to obtain a copy of her death certificate. Even better would be a copy of her original application for a social security card, which usually lists the correct birth date and the names of the parents. You can obtain a copy from the Social Security Administration http://www.ssa.gov/foia/html/foia_guide.htm This way, you can find out for sure if this Josephine S. Sheehan is the same person as Josephine S. Benoit. Wouldn't it be ironic if your father's mother was alive during much of his life, until 1974, and he didn't know it?
