    3. Just for your info. I'm descended from John Alden and Priscilla Mullins through their daughter Elizabeth who married William Pabodie, then Grinnell, then Redfield for many generations and then finally to Hawks and Clark which was my mother's maiden name. Who was Rhoda Clark's husband whom you might be descended from? 3. Hi Carol, James CLARK is one of my "concrete-block walls put together with reinforced cement." He was probably born in the 1790 to 1800 timeframe - somewhere. He "appeared" in Little Compton, RI, in ~1827, and married Rhoda MANCHESTER (b1800) in nearby Westport, MA, in 1829. He fathered a daughter there in 1836, and "disappeared" during the 1840's. He might have been the James CLARK who got on a ship in New Bedford, MA, as a greenhand in 1844. The ship was heading out to a 4-year voyage to the Indian Ocean. James deserted in Australia in 1845. There was a James CLARK on a ship in the St. Lawrence River (P.Q.) in 1825. IF these are all the same man, he was a "travelin' man." I have a hunch that he was from a New England family, but no one has claimed him as part of a family. This is a long, complicated story which I've told on the Lists before, but near the end of the story James CLARK's daughter, Mary Anna CLARK, as a married woman, Mrs. John DEXTER from Killingly, CT, moved to Melrose, MA, and adopted a little girl. That little girl was my grandmother, and my "educated guess" is that they were her grandparents. I can offer more on Rhoda, but I'll have to go retrieve it from the archives. Betty (When my grandmother married in 1911, she listed her birth father as William CLARK. I have no idea who this man was, but it is another hint that the CLARK family was known to her as a teen-ager.) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carol White" <cahwhite@comcast.net> To: <genmassachusetts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 30, 2008 5:17 PM Subject: [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Alden and Mullens > Just for your info. 3. Hi again, I just noticed I made a slight mistake yesterday. When James married Rhoda in Westport, MA, she was a widow, Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE. Her first husband "died at sea" and they had 2 little sons and she was pregnant with their daughter at the time. Betty FYI: While I think of it, this is the story of Rhoda's parents, taken from a posting of mine 6 yrs. ago: Gilbert Manchester* was born in 1766 in Little Compton, RI, and he was the son of Thomas MANCHESTER and Dorcas GIFFORD (of Little Compton, RI?). Mary TOMPKINS was born in 1763 and was the daughter of Micah TOMPKINS and Sarah DRING married in 1755 in Little Compton, RI. Gilbert and Mary married in 1788? in Little Compton, RI. At some point they moved to Westport, MA, as they were listed in the 1800 Census as living in Westport with 5 children, and their younger children were born there. So far, I have come up with the following for their possible children: Samuel Tompkins Manchester, born 1789 Otis Manchester, born 1795 Hannah Manchester, born 1797 Calvin Manchester, born 1800 Rhoda Manchester, born 1800 Elizabeth Manchester, born 1805 http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/genmassachusetts/2002-11/1036842410 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty" <bbffrrpp@comcast.net> To: "Carol White" <cahwhite@comcast.net>; <genmassachusetts@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 01, 2008 5:45 AM Subject: Re: [GENMASSACHUSETTS] Alden and Mullens > Hi Carol, > > James CLARK is one of my "concrete-block walls put together with > reinforced cement."
