    3. Hello, Someone on the HAWAII List got me thinking about my ancestor's nephew, Charles KIDDER, from northern Maine. He left the Calais, ME, area ~1884 to migrate to the Hawaiian Islands. He settled in Honolulu, married there, and had many children. (from the "KIDDER book" and responses to my queries on HAWAII Lists) When I looked at some old postings on that List, I was reminded of a web site which has information on that family. But, it also mentions that a Joseph S. KIDDER was in the Hawaiian Islands ~1850. He was naturalized there in 1851 and got a passport there in 1852. I checked www.familysearch.org just now and the only Joseph S. KIDDER mentioned as having been born in the 1810's to 1830's was: Joseph Souther KIDDER, b1810 in Orleans Co., VT. That site says his parents are Joseph KIDDER and Sarah SOUTHER. And it says he married Clarinda BOWMAN in 1842 in Salem, MA. She might have been from Salem. There is no further information on Clarinda BOWMAN on that site. So, I don't know when she died, and I don't know if they had children. Oops. Another researcher said he married in Salem, MA, in 1836 to Rebecca NOURSE. This researcher says that Rebecca died in 1839 in Lynn, MA. And, it says that Rebecca's parents were Phinehas NOURSE and Anne THOMPSON.) I was just wondering if anyone knew about this couple, and whether Joseph and Clarinda KIDDER ever spent some time living in the Hawaiian Islands (1850's). Or, possibly he went there for a few years. Further checking on-line, and the 1880 census has reportedly the same Joseph KIDDER back in Orleans Co., VT, Age 69, and a widower. And, he has a daughter, Anna R. KIDDER, 40 (b~1840 MA) living with him. If she was born ~1840, she must have been a daughter of Joseph and Rebecca. And, possibly Rebecca died as a result of childbirth in 1839 and that is when Anna was born. I just checked the 1860 census, and Joseph and Clarinda are in Orleans Co., VT, at Ages 49 and 39. They have Alice BOWMAN, 64, living with them. And there is a girl, Lisa? / Kina? KINNEY, 12, living with them. Joseph is still there in 1870, but has probable daughter, Anna KIDDER, 31, with him, and Alice? BOWMAN, 74. So, it seems that Mrs. Clarinda KIDDER died during 1860's in VT. Since we don't have an 1850 census on-line, there still isn't a way to find out if Joseph S. KIDDER spent some time in 1850's in the Hawaiian Islands. This family is not on my family tree. I am just curious about them. Betty (near Lowell, MA) (The father, Joseph KIDDER, is in the 1820 census in Orleans Co., VT, supposedly with a wife and several children.)
